Teen charged with shooting teen to death in Dorchester

UPDATE: Monroe pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Rashard Monroe, 17, will be arraigned today in Dorchester District Court on manslaughter charges in connection with the death of Kendell Floyd, also 17, yesterday.

He's charged with manslaughter, not murder. That may only reflect the evidence currently available, but it may also mean that this was an accidental shooting. Either way, it's another firearm tragedy in Boston.

So maybe it's another case of a kid playing with a loaded gun and it goes off, just like this.

Either way, it's another firearm tragedy in Boston.

It certainly is.

Guns should be banned so criminals won't be able to shoot people anymore.

I'm going to assume that was sarcastic.

Guns are just a convenient means to and end. There are still many other implements that are useful, such as knives, bats, crossbows, bows, fists, boots, nail guns, drills, etc. They aren't all quite as effective as guns, but they'll still get the job done.

Except for the bows and crossbows, all of the weapons you describe require the attacker to be in close physical proximity to the victim. Guns don't.

That's why I said it's a convenient means to an end. If you really want someone dead, the lack of a gun isn't going to stop you.

If these stories are true, then neither this teen nor the one sentenced yesterday wanted their friends dead.

A handgun is a man-killer, plain and simple. It's not used to shoot varmints, and in this case, certainly wasn't intended to be used in sport target shooting. The person who owned the gun owned an instrument whose intended use was to kill someone. Any time you take a loaded man-killer into your hand and start waving it around, all but the mentally incapacitated understand what can happen. That is why we have the charge of manslaughter. Accidents do not result in a charge of manslaughter - you are only so charged when you should have known what could happen.

How did this particular thread of discussion deviate to the definition of a handgun?

I was just pointing out that banning guns because they are dangerous is about as pointless as banning knives because they are sharp, and cars because they are 3000+ pound fuel injected supercharged 250bhp surface to surface missiles.

Everything is dangerous in the wrong hands.

And foreseeable accidents are still accidents.

I think that would be extreme. Accidents do happen. So how about we license drivers and require them to be insured against accidents?

Nah, probably pointless.

Hey, you really do this on every thread involving guns?

You told me last time that you understood that the guns used in these crimes ARE ALMOST ALWAYS ILLEGAL, so why do you post this garbage?

Dorchester District Court Judge James Coffey ordered Monroe held in lieu of $250,000 bail, the Suffolk County District Attorneys office says.

According to a press release:

[Assistant DA Jennifer] Hickman told the Court that Monroe, Floyd, and others were present in a second-floor apartment at about 2:30 yesterday afternoon. Monroe allegedly produced a handgun he was not licensed to own or carry and began "waving it around." Investigators believe that the gun was unintentionally discharged, firing a single round into Floyd's head and killing him. Monroe fled the scene, leaving the gun behind.

Prosecutors say the two teens were friends.

"There's simply no reason a teenager should have access to an unregistered firearm, no matter what his or her intentions may be," [DA Dan] Conley said. "The death of any young person to violence is an appalling tragedy, but Kendell's death at the hands of a friend is monumentally frustrating as well. We have to deglamorize guns and gun violence if we're to prevent more tragic incidents like this one."
