.....we have a serious problem with antisocial, violent behavior by Urban Youth. It has destroyed some neighborhoods and remarkably has pretty much destroyed Downtown Crossing. I hate to see Boston turned into another St. Louis, Baltimore or Philly.

I agree with hydeparkthug's comment! However, I guess I'm in denial because I don't think Philly is that bad. Anyway, we were there and it was quite upsetting! It takes a lot of evil to do something like this to a person! What an Animal! How sick! I realize this world is filled with this, yet to see how some of the people behaved after this poor man was stabbed was also disturbing! I will never take the T in Boston Again! This kind of thing should not have been able to happen! I can't beleive they don't have a suspect! Well, what goes around comes around! That suspect will get his, and far worse!

I know what you experienced was very disturbing and you're right, it should not have been allowed to happen. It's difficult to control what goes on in some neighborhoods because of our politically correct society, but authorities should be able to make the central city a safe zone. Boston doesn't have enough cops and that's a deliberate policy to keep police income levels very high (O.T., detail work, etc.,).

But over a million people use the MBTA every day and it's usually perfectly safe. I myself always avoid using the downtown crossing station because of the what I think are negative vibes and attitudes from the usual suspects. I don't know where you were going, but going to the next station in your direction would have been a better idea.

Anyway, the next time you hear someone who wants to take action regarding law and order issues, especially in our urban areas which is where most American crime occurs, don't dismiss them out of hand. What you saw some people have to deal with everyday, and that's not right.

And Philly has a AWFUL crime problem. It's a very dangerous city! Makes Boston tame by comparison. Baltimore is worse! I was in Philly last year one weekend and there were DOZENS of serious shootings in 48 hr period, including 8 homicides! Boston doesn't even begin to compare crime-wise to D.C., Baltimore,Philly, Thank God. But Boston and state authorities aren't doing nearly enough, and things are getting out of hand.

Boston isn't quite at the same level of societal collapse as those cities with regards to urban youth violence, but the city and state aren't making any serious efforts to curtail the climate which create it. The government is actively subsidizing broken families and criminal behavior through misguided policies. Until the family is restored to a strong societal concept and criminal activity no longer provides more government incentives than a law abiding life, nothing is going to get better.

What we need is more focus on families. If only our government subsidized marriages and children, all social problems would end. If only they didn't provide massive tax breaks for simply saying a few words ("I do").

Oh, wait, they do that already.

Maybe the solution is more complex than just "subsidizing broken families and criminal behavior."

Oh, and unlike you-- I actually saw the police tape and the aftermath. How's the commuter rail trip into the city?

if the anti-trust division of the US Justice Department had been on the ball and prevented the Federated-May merger. All of the area's problems started when this merger led to the closing of Filene's and Filene's Basement.

I'm not disagreeing, but I thought Downtown Crossing was run-down sketchy while Filenes and the Basement were still there.

Too many minorities. I'm scared... even though thousands of people go through Downtown Crossing each day without incident and actually A) Have pleasant interactions with "urban youth" or B) Ignore them altogether.

"pleasant interactions with 'urban youth'"

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA

I *knew* some nitwit was going to play the Race Card.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!: I have no real argument here, so I'm just going to type letters in all-caps and hope you feel sufficiently mocked.

I *knew* some nitwit was going to play the Race Card: I knew someone was going to say they interact with and, in some cases, befriend people of races other than their own. At least I think that's what you mean by "urban youth," right? It's the blacks, right? We're talking about the blacks?

You sanctimonious phonies make me want to fucking vomit: I live somewhere beyond city limits and can't understand why you live life in this fashion. Why don't you just commisserate with people of your own kind and hate those who aren't like you like the rest of us? Be normal, for god's sake!

What is he saying that's not true?: What is he saying that doesn't confirm my preconceived notions of Downtown Crossing and fears about it since my great aunt stopped shopping at Jordan Marsh.

Downtown Crossing was going in that direction: More non-white people were shopping at Downtown Crossing.
