Downtown

By adamg - 2/17/15 - 10:41 am

Around 10:30 a.m., a man with a cane walked into the Citizens Bank branch at 6 Ave. de Lafayette, gave a teller a note demanding money and got some. Police suspect the cane was a prop because he ran out of the bank. He's white, about 5'10" and wearing a blue jacket that says "US Polo Association" on the back.

Driver getting out of overturned truck on I-93 in Boston

Ryan Hamilton Walsh's trip to the airport this morning went more slowly than he expected due to delays caused when a truck overturned in the slush on I-93 at the entrance to the tunnel just past the Zakim.

Walsh reports the driver clambered out OK - as you can see above. The truck, however, was not going to be going anywhere anytime soon.

Around 4 p.m., the Boston Fire Department reports.

Transit Police report the "trespasser" was a man in his 30s.

The T has replaced Red Line service with shuttle buses.

Kelli Autumn videoed first responders on the platform:

Around 6:45 p.m., a man was stabbed several times in the entrance near the Tedeschi on State Street, then staggered into the Black Rose across the street.

Boston and Transit Police are looking for a white male, 5'3" and heavyset, with facial hair, wearing a blue jacket and gray pants.

Crowded platform at South Station

Mark Reagan shows us the hordes waiting for a train around 6 p.m. on a platform at South Station.

It wasn't much better inside the station, where Rebecca Luongo was among the subdued hordes wishing they could be anywhere else other than an overpacked train station.

Two Dunkin' Donuts iced coffees

Snow piled higher than we can see? Giant icicles raining down on us? Temperatures plunging to negative numbers and another Nor'easter about to explode above us? Hah! This is Boston and we laugh in the face of that kind of alleged adversity and then we go out and get our iced coffees, dammit! And make 'em large!

Lori Magno captured the moment aboard an elevator at 33 Arch St. this lunchtime.

Boat at Lincoln and Summer streets in Boston

We needed this. After days of life in Ice Station Zebra, we've all gotten cranky and surly.

So what better thing to lift our moods, if even for a moment, than something so out of the ordinary, so completely ludicrous as a yacht stuck on a snowbank in the middle of downtown Boston?

Boy being rescued from Fort Point Channel

Man pulls boy out of the frigid water.

A passerby who heard the screams of boys playing behind the Intercontinental Hotel rushed down a dock to rescue their playmate, who had fallen into the frigid waters of Fort Point Channel this afternoon.

Tez Garcia, who was nearby taking pictures of the frozen harbor at the time, forwarded photos of the dramatic rescue, which happened around 3:30 p.m.

The kids, who had been playing by themselves on sleds on a mound of snow that ended right at the water a few feet away from the water-taxi dock, start looking for the missing boy - and screaming for help:

Mayor Boris Johnson of London, that is, in town to promote business or something, and loving the idea of depressing highways. That's him on the left.

Buses in a row in Brighton

KWAPT shows us the non-moving bus traffic on Washington Street in Brighton, where a bus and a cab may have tried to occupy the same space at the same time. Traffic elsewhere is marginally better, except possibly in Kenmore Square, where the stop lights have taken the night off.

Atlantic Avenue by Summer is also a morass of non-movingness, as Cybah noticed out his office window:

With particularly frigid temps expected, the MBTA says riders should brace for subway delays tomorrow.

For tomorrow, sub-zero conditions and wind chills as low as minus 20 will likely affect aging trains’ propulsion systems. While the MBTA will work hard to provide regular weekday service, customers are strongly encouraged to stay updated on delays and service interruptions via mbta.com or on twitter @mbta.

The Boston Fire Department ordered Purchase Street between Congress and Summer shut around 9:15 a.m. so workers could remove large icicles from buildings before they fall and impale somebody.

UPDATE: In removing icicles from 51 High St., which also fronts Purchase, firefighters discovered loose parapets. ISD requested to the scene.

Bad traffic on Rutherford Avenue in Charlestown

Cram and jam on inbound Rutherford Avenue in Charlestown. Photo by Tucc06.

Because it's sounding like downtown and surrounding areas are at gridlock right now - and it can't possibly be because of people heading to the Beanpot, can it?

Jaci reports:

Two lanes are trying to exit at Charles MGH off Storrow. Those two lanes are not moving.

Ashley Steriti adds:

Revere to Back Bay via car. 75 minutes and still in the tunnel. Can't even see the light of Storrow Drive yet
