Coots at Jamaica pond

Several coots have made their late-fall arrival at Jamaica Pond - looking like ducks in the water, and sort of chickens on land, except for their feet, which look like, well, nothing you'd expect.

Large fungus on a tree stump on the path around Jamaica Pond

Along the path around Jamaica Pond, near where Parkman Drive and the Arborway meet in that rotary is a tree stump. There are several clumps of toadstools, the largest of which had dozens and dozens of them, all tightly clustered as if trying to huddle for warmth. And then there is this large, almost flowering, single fungus. Read more.

American wigeon

This female American wigeon decided to hang with all the mallards on the north side of Jamaica Pond this afternoon, but acting a bit more skittish than her larger ducky friends. At one point, a bunch of them took off all of a sudden and she departed with them - before they all splashed down again about halfway down the pond.

Bald eagle in Jamaica Pond

Mark MacGilchrist spotted a bald eagle in a tree on Moss Hill, near Jamaica Pond today. A bald eagle had frequented the pond area this past spring. In July, an eagle surveyed the scene from a tree in West Roxbury.

Performing near the fog

To go along with the Fog x FLO display at Jamaica Pond today, Mattia C. Mauree and Pampi put on a performance every half hour while the fog was fogging. They didn't have much time for any of the performances - the fog only comes on for about two minutes.

Rain over Kenmore Square

Paula Tennyson watched the rain come down over Kenmore Square and the Fenway around 4 p.m.

Piper at Jamaica Pond

There was a piper of some sort flitting around the north shore of Jamaica Pond this afternoon.

Wood ducks in a row at Jamaica Pond

A mama wood duck watched over her brood as they turned in for the night on a log at the north end of Jamaica Pond late this afternoon. Read more.

Heron at Jamaica Pond

Over the past few days, three herons have taken up residence at Jamaica Pond, along with the ducks and the geese. They'll stand for awhile along the shores, or perch on the branches of the tree on the island, and then something will catch their eye and they'll take off and fly over to another part of the pond.

A flock of blue damselflies were hanging out on the shore of Jamaica Pond, on the Parkman Drive side, near the Arborway.

Hawk with squirrel at Jamaica Pond

Late yesterday afternoon, this hawk sat in a tree on the Jamaica Pond shore along Parkman Drive. Oh, look, it has some dinner. After about 30 seconds of me taking its photo, it had enough and flew off, with dinner, right in front of a runner on the path.

Turtle at Jamaica Pond

Before the clouds completely took over the sky this afternoon, a turtle sunned itself on the usual turtle perch on one of the fallen tree branches near the northern end of Jamaica Pond.

Swans in Jamaica Pond

There are three swans at the pond these days - a couple and a third wheel. Yesterday afternoon, all converged on the small island at the northern end of the pond, but the couple was not in a sharing mood - one of them broke off and drove away the third swan, which decided the middle of the pond wasn't so bad after all.

Ice training on Jamaica Pond

Jonathan Tompkins got a view of Boston firefighters practicing ice rescues at the north end of Jamaica Pond this morning. Despite the warming temperatures of recent days, the ice still held for them - and they had to cut some holes in the ice to practice their rescue techniques.
