the cops-eating-donuts thing is untrue (most cops I know would be mortified to be seen eating a donut). if you really stopped to take a look, you would find most cops are actually in pretty good shape. one fat cop does not represent the whole police population. the nature of the job, over the course of a 32 year career, does take a great toll on one's body.

I've always thought that maybe cops just needed good, clean places to hang out and get some coffee or a snack if they are out on patrol during the day. And during the night I bet donut shops are one of the few things open.
I also wouldn't be surprised if going to a local donut shop regularly would be a good way to keep tabs on what's going on in the area! I bet the people who work in donut shops see lots of regulars and know a lot about what is happening.
