Globe union: Let's do it in public

So reports the Herald:

The Boston Globe employee union that represents the paper’s reporters and photographers has agreed to negotiate with The New York Times [NYT] Co. as the beleaguered broadsheet's management seeks ways to significantly trim its operating costs.

But that union - the Boston Newspaper Guild - will only negotiate if the sessions are done in public.

I love it! The union has positioned itself on the side of transparency, flexibility, and the public interest.

Labor negotiations are normally done behind closed doors. I can't imagine what they'd be like in a fishbowl. Has this ever been done successfully?

...I can't recall in such a loaded situation.

It's no doubt an effort to position the union as the voice of openness and public accountability, with little downside because in the extremely unlikely case that management agreed to this, the union has nothing to hide in this context and can use the negotiations as a bully pulpit to shine a light on corporate practices, executive compensation, etc.

It's a creative negotiating tactic in any event.
