Council supports Constitution, condemns complaining Charlestown condo dwellers

The Boston City Council voted unanimously today to support the tradition of twice-daily cannon shots at the USS Constitution in Charlestown.

Beyond supporting a custom that dates to 1798, some city councilors told Charletown newcomers complaining about the cannon fire to read up on local history.

"When someone moves into the city of Boston, they need to understand the traditions we have, the history," Councilor Sal LaMattina, who represents Charlestown, said.

Councilor Maureen Feeney, who reprsents Dorchester, went even further, saying she found it "almost offensive" that anybody would object to the sound of cannons. "It's so disprespectful for us to turn our back on the sacrifices that were made. ... I'm sorry, it's sad that we even have to have this discussion."

Reason trumps money.

That one doesn't happen too often.

I can see someone with an infant having a reasonable objection.

So "My baby is trying to sleep" is somehow "offensive" ?

Again, the answer is to not move to a building directly next to an active-duty naval vessel that fires its guns twice daily, if that is the kind of thing that you do not want to experience twice daily.

Or pay for some soundproofing on your nice 500K condo.

It's irresponsible to expect a historical neighborhood to change it's ways because you decided you wanted to move in.

So yes, that is offensive. Extremely offensive to our nation, our Vets, and our collective history.

Actually live very close by, in the row houses opposite the cannons. Little kids abound in the Navy housing there! There are some babies in the luxury apartments, but not too many that I've seen.

Perhaps some large tankers should swing by as they exit the harbor and MEEP! MEEP! MEEP! as each departs.

Except that would be annoying to the many people who understand the cannons and actually kind of like it.

By comparison, the cannon shots are pretty damn predictable. Just warn your guests that cannon fire will happen and when and nobody will drop their foie gras with caviar omlette on the patio! You can even plan a walk to go see it! From what I saw working in the area, a fair number of people who live over there do exactly that - bring friends and family down to the area to watch.

This is every bit as stupid as when yuppie condo owners in the Back Bay complained that all the students devalued their property ... when the student residences were there 50 to 100 years before the condos.

And every bit as stupid as condo owners on Upton Street who moved in next to a transitional living facility, then complained it affected the character of the neighborhood ... when the transitional living facility was there decades before any of the current condo owners.

And every bit as stupid as yuppie condo owners who bought next to the South Street Diner, then complained about the noise ... when the Diner was there 50 years before the condos.

Have you researched those who are bitching about the cannons? Do you personally know that they are yuppies? Maybe they're condo owners in their fifties and sixties. Just saying.
Also: most of the people who complain about students in the Back Bay are too old to be yuppies.

I worked in the Navy Yard for three years, and have a friend who has lived over there for eight years. In the 1990s, my boss lived on a boat in the marina.

The residential property in the area is very upscale and expensive. The only "working class" housing in the area is for the Navy personnel posted at the Constitution.

Just saying ...

Huh?
Forget the fact that classifying all the cannon whiners as yuppies is a gross generalization to begin with. When did upscale property become exclusive to the yuppie set?
