Finally, the question the Boston Globe has been waiting for! I'm sure right now they have a "Boston's Best Burgers" slideshow you can click though. Of course they won't offer any details about the establishments or give any indication of why any one burger is better then another but at least they have plenty of ads you can watch while you wait for the page to load.
They stopped reporting a long time ago and switched to an all infotainment slideshow format so someone might as well take advantage of it. Also check them out for stock art slideshows of useless resume tips.
I used to think Cornwall's in Kenmore Sq had the best blue cheese burgers on this side of town. I think they are off their peak (burger wise) but the place is still hard to beat if you are willing to leave Allston.
My favorites are at Deep Ellum (also a great bar for beer and cocktail geeks), Harry's Bar & Grill (one of those massive pub-style burgers), and uBurger (a quality rendition of a cheap fast-food burger). Big Daddy's is a sub shop that does a nice version of a burger/BLT club sandwich.
The kafta kabab rollup at Azama Grill is delicious, like an Egyptian variant on the burger. Root does a spectacular version of a veggie burger with great fries. (It's actually vegan, but don't tell nobody.)
But Big Daddy's is pretty far from Allston (and even further from any part of Allston where you'd be likely to be in search of good food) unless they've opened a second location.
I included a couple of Brighton options. I think Harry's is properly considered Brighton. It's a food writer tic, reflexively including suggestions slightly beyond the original request, like a veggie burger and an Egyptian ground-beef kebab option.
My vote goes to The Stockyard. I've been fixated on their Prime Rib French Dip Sandwich my last two visits but the burger is easily the best in the neighborhood.
Dude , cross the border into Brighton and get to the Irish Village on Market street . I am lusting now for one myself , heavily onioned and pinted up !
a chain called BurgerFi is opening up in the former Qdoba spot on Comm Ave. I had it down in fort lauderdale back in may. really good quality burgers - on par with Shake Shack, but far less of a ripoff.
The Boyne is technically in Brighton, but it "feels" more like Allston. But they have good grub and the Irish Mixed Grill is a great deal, and their Guinness is decent too:

I thought they were closed
I thought they were closed and was going to say so, but the comments on their Yelp review page says they're open under new management:

One of my favorite bars.....
The Irish Village. Haven't been there in a few years. One of the best guinnesses in Boston as well. (At least 10 years ago it was)
Although I second Eagles for one of the best burgers. Get the King Kong. One solid 1/2 pound patty.
The Irish Village hasn't
The Irish Village hasn't served food in years. Go to Porter Bellys.

The Avenue
Awesome burgers. Great price. Plus a fantastic selection of beers (also reasonably priced) and lots of other amazing food (namely, the wings).
Jim's
The Avenue is good -- if you go on Monday, you can get $2 burgers.
But for true burger joy you need to get out to Brighton Center and get a bacon cheddar burger from Jim's Deli.
