Be sticking around Boston, that is. David Scott has the scoop on Mae's contract extension with NESN, which he credits in part to her "evocative wardrobe," if you know what he means.

Kristen explains why fans should consider booing World-Series-Ball Doug when he shows up with the Royals tonight. Or just drink some gin and misspell his name as creatively as possible.

Jason Feifer reports that Seth Mnookin, author of that inside-baseball book about the Red Sox front office, got a little testy at a Newton reading when some folks questioned whether his book was really all that. Jason also tells us how to pronounce "Mnookin."

That compliment having been made, however, it was odd to read him today complaining about the amount of wasted newsprint and verbiage on Manny's All-Star No-Show, because his entire column was about, well, Manny's All-Star No-Show.

One guess which broadcast team Red is referring to (hint: It's not Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo on NESN).

By adamg - 7/7/06 - 10:05 pm

David Scott makes the case that Jerry Remy is veering toward annoying and has been going downhill ever since Sean McDonough's departure:

... The games have gone from baseball broadcasts to RemDawg infomercials, right down to the dutiful infomercial co-host, Dandy Don Orsillo, who even got his own "Yo-Lo-Go-Lo-Va" t-rag during a recent game. ...

Kristie was not born here, but she bleeds Sox red and blue as much as people whose grandparents remember seeing Teddy Ballgame at the plate. Plus, no way is she giving up her lime-green Sox cap.

Soxholix tackles tough doctrinal questions involving pink Sox caps and the question of whether people who only started rooting in 2004 can ever truly be members of The Nation:

... Well, you think if someone walks into St. Marks and says they want to convert that the priest is going to be all, "Well, dude, where the fuck were you when we were getting thrown to the lions?" C'mon. ...

Beth recaps last night's game from her seat in Loge Box 150:

... Already juiced by Coco's dazzling catch just moments earlier, "Sweet Caroline" rousingly sung and the Papi blast, the crowd went so completely wild as the first chords of Jonathan's entrance music sounded that I wondered seriously if we might ever just shake that old place down. It took him just a handful of pitches to retire the Mets, and I was there, goddammit, watching every one, screaming my fool head off, happy just to be alive.

Beth says Martinez's shellacking almost went too far. After that dropped ball by Lastings Milledge, she thought:

... I wished right then that it was over. I wished the Mets manager would pull him. I wanted there to be mercy. But there wasn't. ... This was defeat. I root for the laundry as much as anyone, but you might as well have drawn a moustache on the Mona Lisa right in front of me. I want the Sox to win at absolutely all times, but I never wanted to see that. ...

OK, so the Globe inexplicably ran a Bob Ryan column about Pedro's return instead of one by the CHB, but still: Go check out and vote on the top 17 entries in Bruce Allen's Shaughnessy Write-Alike contest.

... Tonight he returns. Not as a despised Yankee, as his former teammate Johnny Damon did, but as another Golem of Gotham: a New York Met.

By adamg - 6/28/06 - 9:32 am

Beth loved everything about last night's game, from the Pedro standing ovation to that out at the plate, but especially that bases-loaded, two-outs third strike by John Lester:

Is how much he makes you appreciate Remy, Orsillo, Castiglione and Trupiano.

Aw, but screw it, because:

PAPI, PAPI, PAPI!!!

Soxaholix takes note of Boston Sports Media Watch's Dan Shaughnessy write-alike contest by trying to figure out an entry:

...And his thesis will be along the lines of "Oh, you poor unwashed, unsophisticated, Boston fan fools. You drove Pedro away with your mean Puritanical spirits and the terrible things you said about him. I tried to warn you."

Now that a marginal player from back in the day has admitted to shooting up (to a non-local media outlet), David Scott wonders if the local papers will do some investigative work:

... The Steroids Scandal has been barely played out in Boston and that needs to change.

Today is Evan Brunell's last day working for the Red Sox Foundation, so he describes his nine months there.

By adamg - 6/21/06 - 9:21 am

No, not better than Shaughnessy. Exactly like Shaughnessy. At Boston Sports Media Watch, Bruce Allen is running a Shaughnessy write-alike contest:

... Next week, the New York Mets come into town, and of course with them will be Pedro Martinez. We know Shaughnessy will write a column about the return of Pedro. You probably have a good idea what it is going to read like.

So write it.
