Big beam

Yesterday, a trucker delivered this oversize-load sized steel beam to Robert Street in Roslindale Square so that, starting at 4 a.m. on Saturday, workers can begin to replace the bridge that now carries the Needham Line over the street. The bridge dates to 1898.

Cockeyed Parrot on Washington Street in Roslindale

Update, Friday morning: And just like that, the sign is covered over again.

For several decades now, the space next to the convenience store on Washington Street across from Washington-Beech has been a laundromat. It's getting remodeled, though, and today it returned to its days in the 1960s and early 1970s, when it was a discount clothing store, with a '60s-style sign that was never taken down, just boarded over. Napper Tandy's on Washington Street in Roslindale Square reports it's getting ready to re-open after months with its doors shut due to Covid-19 - and it's looking to hire "bartenders, servers, cooks, and dishwashers."

The City Council yesterday approved a request by Councilor Ricardo Arroyo (Roslindale, Hyde Park, Mattapan) to look into how to get the city to build dog parks south of the Fenway, where he said dog-owning residents deserve the same facilities as those in the South End, the North End, Dorchester and other neighborhoods that already have dog parks. Firefighters at 17 Murray Hill Road fire

The Boston Fire Department reports that a fire that broke out around midnight at 17 Murray Hill Rd. off Washington Street in Roslindale Square caused an estimated $400,000 in damage.

There were no injuries, the department says.

Charlotte Golar Richie signs in the snow

A roving UHub photographer was hiking through the Roslindale side of Stony Brook Reservation with his family yesterday when they came across these seemingly fresh Charlotte Golar Richie signs just lying in the snow. She ran in 2013, so who's been sitting on these signs for eight years (both signs and tarp look pretty fresh) and suddenly decided they had to get rid of them and the best way to do that was dump them in the woods?

The owner of Silva's Brazilian Market on Belgrade Avenue at Walworth Street wants to sell the shop and its beer and wine license to Lorenzo Mercado, who is proposing to re-open it as the Punta Cana Beer & Wine Market, with a closing time of 11 p.m.

The proposed license transfer goes before the Boston Licensing Board on Wednesday, in hearings that begin at 1 p.m.

Police in Boston, Quincy, Norwood and Randolph, with help from State Police and US marshals raided several locations in raids that kicked off at 5:45 a.m. in search of guns and drugs as a followup to arrests and gun seizures in a Dorchester park last November. Read more.

Advancing coyote in the Arboretum

Grace Holley posed a question yesterday:

You’re on a snow walk in the Arboretum w your pup and you turn the corner and see this 15-20 ft away and it starts walking toward you...what do you do?

Meanwhile, Blvckmachina recorded about seven coyotes in his yard on Glenellen Road in West Roxbury around 4:50 a.m. on Sunday: Read more.

Boston firefighters responded to 91 Metropolitan Ave., at Kittredge Street, in Roslindale, for a second-floor fire around 10:15 p.m. Firefighters quickly knocked down the fire, but seven residents were displaced.

A city parks manager said yesterday that Boston is looking at how to put a dog park in every neighborhood - potentially good news for residents in the city's southern half, who currently have none and who have been repeatedly rebuffed by state officials on the large expanses of state parkland in the area.
