A federal judge yesterday reduced Alfred Trenkler's life sentence to 41 years for his role in building a bomb that was supposed to destroy a friend's father's car in Roslindale in 1991, but which instead detonated when two Boston bomb-squad officers tried to defuse it, killing one and maiming the other. This past Friday and Saturday nights, Boston Police assigned extra officers to patrol the area of American Legion Highway and Walk Hill Street to break up any nascent street parties and, residents report, it worked. But no extra officers on overtime Saturday night into Sunday morning meant nobody stationed there and the result was a loud party that lasted well into the morning, residents say. Read more.

Hyde Park, Roslindale and Mattapan residents who want to preserve the 24-acre Crane's Ledge property on and above American Legion Highway near the Walgreens say they hope to make a case that the city buy the land to preserve it in its current wooded, rocky state, but that failing that, they will look to a recently enacted state environmental law that requires extensive study of any large projects affecting poorer or minority neighborhoods. Boston Police are looking for three guys they say broke into Bob's Pita Market, 4198 Washington St. in Roslindale Square early on April 25, found nothing of any value worth stealing, then beat up a store employee who responded to the alarm they triggered, took his car keys, beat him up again when he came after them, then fled with nothing when somebody who happened to be driving by stopped to see what the commotion was about. City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan) says it's way past time for Boston to begin installing dog parks outside the "high income neighborhoods" he says have them now - and that the city should be planning them first, rather than waiting for organized groups of dog owners with discretionary income to push for them. Roxbury Prep told supporters today it's given up on plans to build a new high school on Belgrade Avenue at the Roslindale/West Roxbury line, four years after it first proposed the idea, only to be confronted by both angry residents and a BPDA bureaucracy that kept the plans bottled up far longer than it took to get a 55-story skyscraper downtown approved. Big beam

Yesterday, a trucker delivered this oversize-load sized steel beam to Robert Street in Roslindale Square so that, starting at 4 a.m. on Saturday, workers can begin to replace the bridge that now carries the Needham Line over the street. The bridge dates to 1898.

Cockeyed Parrot on Washington Street in Roslindale

Update, Friday morning: And just like that, the sign is covered over again.

For several decades now, the space next to the convenience store on Washington Street across from Washington-Beech has been a laundromat. It's getting remodeled, though, and today it returned to its days in the 1960s and early 1970s, when it was a discount clothing store, with a '60s-style sign that was never taken down, just boarded over.
