Last night, there were a couple of loud booms by the Hennigan School in Jamaica Plain, where somebody set off some M-80s, but that was nothing compared to tonight, when Boston Police are being kept busy responding to reports of gunfire that turn out to be fireworks. From Roslindale to Brighton, Dorchester to Roxbury, residents are dialing 911 at a rapid pace to report sudden retorts - fortunately almost all of which turn out to be people celebrating Let's Blow Stuff Up Every Night Through August Day.

The Dorchester Reporter interviews David Portnoy, who doesn't plan on walking in any parades as he runs for mayor this year:

Would you rather vote for the guy running around to all the parades so he could show his face or the guy who's watching the Bruins at home?' Because I'm not trying to appeal to everybody or be very political. I'm the guy, the typical guy next door.

Boston Police are looking for a car they say thieves stole to make their getaway after breaking into a home on Spaulding Street yesterday afternoon and stealing two handguns, an AR-15 rifle and more than 300 rounds of ammunition.

If you see a gray, 2010 Jetta, with Mass. plates 811-LW8, contact police and do not approach.

Remember when talk-show hosts mostly weren't all angry, spitting screamers? The Orlando Sentinel reports the former WRKO host - and one-time Libertarian presidential candidate - died today in San Francisco. He was 72.

Boston woke up on Dec. 8, 1941 a changed, frightened and determined city. With war declared, Boston felt particularly vulnerable, given its position right on the coast. But Boston also rolled up its sleeves to help fend off the Axis. Scores of Leslie Jones photos posted by the BPL this week give a taste of life in wartime.

The State House's golden dome was painted over, to keep Beacon Hill from becoming a, well, beacon for Nazi warships (a skylight at MIT's Great Dome was similarly covered up; MIT only began restoring it last fall):

Blackstonian posts the list of the candidates who turned in enough signatures to qualify for the preliminary ballot this fall.

David Portnoy of Barstool Sport, of course, had said all along he's running for El Alcalde, but Yancey, the city's longest serving district city councilor, had played coy all along. Also making the cut: Robert Capucci, along with several other people.

There is no estimate on service restoration:

Starting Monday, Metro-North Railroad will offer alternate transportation for passengers traveling between New Haven, Conn., and Grand Central Terminal via a train-bus-train connection. Amtrak passengers using this option will need to arrange for transportation between Grand Central and New York Penn Station.

Peter Gelzinis explains why first we'll see a race to sew up geographical areas (West Roxbury/Hyde Park/JP vs. Dorchester) and the "progressive minority vote," then, after the preliminary shrinks a field of 10 or 12 down to 2, we can get down to actual issues. Also, Gareth Saunders needs to consider whether he wants to join Althea Garrison and Roy Owens in the League of Perpetual Candidates.
