87 Sawyer St fire in Dorchester

The Boston Fire Department says "careless disposal of smoking material" started a fire this afternoon that did $500,000 in damage to the house at 87 Sawyer Ave. and melted the siding on the house next door. Read more.

Around 11:20 p.m., at Topliff and Stonehurst streets One victim was found on Stonehurst between Topliff and Norton. The second was found on Norton Street, near Speedwell.

A car was also hit.

Fire on Sudan Street in Dorchester

The Boston Fire Department reports a fire called in around 11 a.m. did $75,000 damage to 45-47 Sudan St. and another $25,000 in damage to a neighboring three decker.

The department reports no injuries. The cause and origin remain under investigation.

Boston Police report the man shot to death in broad daylight on Hancock Street on July 7 was Brandon Smith, 28, of Dorchester.

Police say they are continuing to investigate the shooting, in which a woman was shot in the leg.

The South End Forum reports the company that wanted to keep its check-cashing place at Mass. Ave. and Tremont Street open 24 hours has told the mayor's office, nah, just kidding, they'll keep closing at midnight. But the group adds:

They will however pursue a proposal for a 24/7 operation at their Edward Everett Square location at Boston Street in Dorchester.

Two Globe reporters spend time with the addicts on the stretch of Mass. Ave. now known as Methadone Mile.

It's an interesting, sad read, worth the time - and maybe an e-mail to the mayor's office asking whatever happened to Long Island.

Perhaps there'll be a part 2 in which they talk to the people who live in that area (yes, there are apartments there) on how their lives have been changed by the influx.

Dan Kennedy reports, adds the Globe isn't saying who - or what they'll do with the 16.4-acre parcel. Bill Forry, of what could soon be the only newspaper based in Dorchester, adds that whatever gets proposed will likely need both city and state approval - the latter because of potential contamination on the site and because it sits right next to a marsh.

A utility pole fell around 7:20 p.m. at Erie and Washington streets in Dorchester, bringing down phone and electrical wires and trapping a man in the car for 45 minutes until Eversource turned off the power and firefighters were able to get him out and hand him over to EMS to be checked out (photo of the pole and car). Police and fire investigators are both looking at how the pre-teen suffered the injuries around 9:30 p.m. at 320 Talbot Ave. WBZ reports the cause was fireworks. Somebody in the apartment initially told first responders a microwave oven had blown up.
