A stubborn trash fire that erupted around 11:20 a.m. at Casella Waste Systems off Rutherford Avenue sent five firefighters to the hospital with injuries, the Boston Fire Department reports. Read more.

In the second judicial defeat for the BRA in a week involving waterfront land, the Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled today the developer of an apartment complex in Charlestown has to comply with a state order to set aside most of its ground floor for "public accommodation" uses under state waterfront regulations.Read more.

Boston Police are investigating the death of a motorcyclist in a crash around 11:05 p.m. on Thursday at 55 Cambridge St.

A police spokesman said the motorcycle was the only vehicle involved and that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene; said additional information was not available this morning.

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today that Shawn Fritz got a fair trial and saw no reason to overturn a jury's verdict that he pumped five bullets into Albert Titcomb III's head in a Bunker Hill housing project hallway in 1994.

Fritz, 22 at the time of the murder, was found guilty in 1996 of first-degree murder based on "deliberate premeditation and extreme atrocity or cruelty." Read more.

US Coast Guard's Eagle docked in Charlestown

Overturned trailer near Sullivan Square

Creatine Avenger shows us that Sullivan Square commuters have 99 problems - all of them related to this tractor trailer that overturned early this morning. Things remained a mess as of 7:37 a.m., Jesse E-V reports.

The Portland Press-Herald reports Anthony Menici, 33, plowed into a Wells, ME cruiser so fast on I-95 that the cruiser was flipped over. The officers in the patrol car suffered minor injuries; Menici required hospitalization for his injuries.

Entering Boston, incorporated 1822

Most of the time, when you enter Boston, the signs say "Est. 1630." But when you enter Charlestown on Broadway from Everett, the signs say "Inc. 1822," which, while not inaccurate, since they refer to when Boston was incorporated as a city, just seem kind of odd.
