Rebel music played by Yankees

Mike Ball goes to a performance at the Hyde Park library of the 2nd South Carolina String Band, which plays the music Southern soldiers would have listened to, and is surprised to learn that most of the band members are from Massachusetts.

My mother, and actually a lot of my extended family, are Civil War reenactors, and when they began they were on the Confederate side, although they are Union now. Because someone has to play the rebels, or there would be no battle! I asked her if there was any weird breakdown of belief/political systems by anyone on any side, and she said no, it was pretty evenly dispersed. Most of these events are in the New England area, although she often travels into PA and even VA for them.
