Man charged with possession of an illegal spark plug

True, spark plugs are not normally considered contraband - unless you allegedly use one to try to break into a car, as a West Roxbury man learned in the South End last night.

Jonathan Holcomb, 34, was charged with breaking and entering a motor vehicle and possession of a burglarious tool - the spark plug - after a witness spotted him using the metal object to try to break the window of a car on Appleton Street near Clarendon around 11:30 p.m., police report.

This is not Holcomb's first arrest for an attempted car break-in.

Innocent, etc.

An Iowan view of Massachusetts

A headline that really pops.A headline that really pops.

A roving UHub Gather user wonders just what this "pop" is that Deval Patrick allegedly wants to slather taxes on, according to this article by a resident of HFCSland. Is it anything like tonic?

Stakeout at South Shore commuter lot works: Couple nabbed as catalytic-converter thieves

Platinum couple MBTA Transit Police report arresting a Fall River couple on charges they stole catalytic converters off cars parking in commuter lots in Hanson and Halifax last night.

Dennis and Tina Fager, 39 and 37, were only charged with the three catalytic converters police found them with, but said they could be responsible for as many as 100 converter grabs on the South Shore.

Police say detectives who had staked out the Hanson commuter-rail parking lot due to a spate of recent converter thefts spotted the couple drive into the lot around 4:15 p.m. yesterday, just after an inbound train departed the station:

They were observed driving in between unattended parked cars. They were also observed stopping briefly between cars, exiting the truck, looking around in a suspicious manner, re-enter their truck and continued driving around the parking lot. They stopped their vehicle behind Detective Conway who observed the female, identified as Tina Fager, stand up on the door jam and look around the parking lot as the male, identified as Dennis Fager, ducked down below the truck and out of view. Moments later, Detective Conway heard sounds consistent with metal being cut with a power tool as well as the sound of metal hitting the ground. Shortly after, Detective Conway heard the sound consistent with the sound of a heavy a metallic object being dropped into the back of the pick-up truck.

Dennis and Tina Fager both got back into the truck and drove to a different location and began to repeat their behavior as Tina Fager was observed by Detectives Sean Conway and T.J. Leonard acting in an suspicious manner consistent with being a "look out." Detective Conway observed Dennis Fager again, duck down between cars. Based on their observations, Detective T.J. Leonard approached Tina Fager, Detective Conway approached Dennis Fager. The suspects were arrested after Detective Conway and Detective Leonard observed the catalytic converters in the pick-up truck Dennis Fager was operating with Tina Fager who was a passenger and acting as a "look out." The truck had a cover over the bed of the truck and the tail gate was down allowing the detectives a plain view of the three catalytic converters as well as a battery operated reciprocating saw.

Police say Tina Fager admitted the two other converters in the back of their pickup came from cars at Halifax station.

They were scheduled for arraignment in Plymouth District Court today. Police say the converters, which can be sawed off in less than two minutes, are increasingly attractive to thieves due to the value of the platinum they contain. Converters can cost up to $1,000 to replace.

This is at least a second arrest for Dennis Fager on converter-theft charges. In 2008, he was arrested for allegedly stealing catalytic converters off cars parked at the East Bridgewater YMCA.

State records show Fager had prior experience with pipes - he had a license as an apprentice plumber through 2006.

Innocent, etc.

Citizen complaint of the day: Crisis of font in the South End

An aggrieved citizen reports from Appleton Street:

The new street signs using the Clearview font are an improvement, but this sign is incorrect. The capital A is out of proportion to the lower case letters, and it is visually jarring. The signs with all capital letters, such as at the corner of Tremont and Hanson Streets, are correctly printed and look much better. The city should continue to correct this. It is a small detail that impacts the visual quality of the South End. Thank you.

Earlier:
The DPW's sign painters will rue the day they messed with the South End.

Fed up with leering men on Harvard Avenue, woman punches one

Allison Francis explains her need to punch the stranger after enduring leers and "oooohs" and solicitations on a walk between Comm. Ave. and Brighton with her girlfriend:

I'm not exactly a placid person, but I'd never punched someone before and I believe in the merits of peace over violence. Whatever that guy said wasn't the worst thing that's been said to me by any means. I just snapped. After 23 years as a woman and ~2 years being 'out' in Allston, after having been forced to tolerate my relationships and humanity degraded on a regular basis with no option other than to keep walking, I wasn't going to take it. It's not okay how so many men behave as though they have the right to aggressively address strangers on the street because we're women, and it's not okay that we are expected to take it with a smile.

Anger at the T

WBUR reports on packed hearings yesterday on the state's plans to cut service and raise fares on the MBTA:

There appears little support on Beacon Hill for a funding alternative to the fare hikes and service cuts.

Don't look to Deval Patrick for any leadership on the issue: His state of the state address didn't mention the T crisis once, unless you count a glancing reference to our "crumbling infrastructure."

Meanwhile, one map aficionado groans whenever he looks at the current MBTA map:

I really dislike the knobby, multi-armed Transfer Stations - South Station and Forest Hills look incredibly messy, while Haymarket’s angled bus stop circle clearly shows that the designer simply ran out of room and cheated to fit the station name in. Even worse are the transfer stations rotated to a random, non-45-degree angle (also cheating) to allow them to connect to a bus service (see Hynes, Coolidge Corner and Harvard Ave on the Green Line for examples).

The Silver Line is one hot mess. ...
