Boiler on the move

Big-ass boiler

Rachel captured the Big-Ass Boiler of MIT on Putnam Street as it made its way under cover of darkness from the Arlington parking lot where it had sat since last Thursday to its ultimate home providing hot water for the Institute.

Apparently unable to convince Somerville - which had blocked the boiler at the border - that the oversized vessel would not explode and shower residents with, um, air, contractors worked with Cambridge and State Police to find a route entirely through the People's Republic.

Rachel reports the boiler was preceded down Cantabridgian roads by "2 bucket trucks and an enormous mulcher," which made short work of any tree limbs that dared obstruct the behemoth on its slow but steady march to MIT. In fact, her photo shows the bad boy chillin' as crews made Cambridge less leafy at Putnam and Sidney.

Seriously missing Boston

Rob V. checks in from the Other Coast:

I'm sitting in a terminal at LAX and wishing I was waiting for the Silver Line.

I hate the Silver Line.

I love my family in LA, but I hate this city so much that I wish I was on the Silver Line right now...

Drunk driver charged with beating girlfriend, carjacking delivery guy, causing crash on Expressway

A repeat drunk driver created a swath of destruction starting in his girlfriend's apartment and ending in a car crash on I-93 in Dorchester early this morning, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office charges.

Prosecutors say Charles Rampino, 47, of Jamaica Plain, went into a drunken rage at his girlfriend's apartment on Pearl Street in Dorchester, tearing the place apart and pushing her against a wall. He ran out, spotted a Jeep with keys in the ignition and took off - after punching the Jeep's owner, a food-delivery guy - in the face.

But have they checked the sewers?

Wicked Local Saugus reports an alligator might be on the loose in a Saugus pond. Or it might not. In any case, it's reassuring to know that a Massachusetts wildlife expert has "a reptile-sniffing dog" ready for just such emergencies.

Citizen complaint of the day: 3 a.m. is no time for a blue-light special in the South End

Blue light of doom On the one hand, a bleary-eyed South Ender writes, it's a good thing the police (MBTA in this case, not BPD) have perched an all-seeing eyecam on Harrison between East Berkeley and Traveler: Maybe it'll scare away the crack dealers. On the other hand, however:

The tower has a blue flashing light that runs 24/7. It never stops and forces us to close our blinds so we can sleep. Keep the tower and lose the light at night please.

Mother charged with punching infant son in the mouth on a T bus

RyanMBTA Transit Police report arresting a woman they say punched her infant son hard enough to make his mouth bleed on a 23 bus yesterday afternoon.

According to police, when fellow passengers on the bus "expressed their concern for the well being of the child," Erica Ryan, 25, told them to mind their own business.

Police say Ryan told responding officers that "I was trying to feed my baby on the crowded bus, then my hand slipped and I hit him in the mouth."

But fellow passengers told a different story:

Groupon to JP: Car washes can help blind potential carjackers - like the one you had last week

A local Groupon subscriber forwards the offer he got today for a JP-based car wash:

A shiny car can blind potential carjackers just long enough to distract them while you steal their bikes. Fight crime with today's Groupon ...

Guess Groupon must follow the local news pretty closely.

Ed. disclosure: I have an affiliate deal with one of Groupon's competitors.
