Boston - Speakeasy central?

According to the "Help a Reporter Out" website, a Boston Globe reporter is looking for information on the following:

Writing a story about the rise of private, speak-easy style clubs in Boston, and I'm wondering why these are coming back into vogue now? (The new great depression?). Is this a Boston-only phenom? And also why there is a renaissance of these old-timey clubs and drinks occurring now.

Is this really happening in Boston or is it simply a topic in search of a story?

Maybe it's happening but since the clubs are "private", I've just never heard of them?

JGlee tries out Sandrine's in Harvard Square, the Boston area's only Alsatian restaurant, declares it interesting, but not the place to go for solid French food:

... It's not everyday you get to try authentic Alsatian food right in the middle of New England. ...

Conference Half Over - Enterprise 2.0

The Enterprise 2.0 Conference is still going on. The numbers jumped significantly from Monday to Tuesday and it's - in my opinion - pretty well attended now. That said, I did a quick eval of the conference through the Wednesday morning sessions.

Go read it here.

What events have you been to lately in town? Anything great coming up? Share in the comments.

Four BPL branches to lose security guards July 1

People of Boston Branches reports the South End and Lower Mills branches will lose all security-guard service effective July 1, while the Fields Corner and Hyde Park branches will be guardless most of the time.

Meanwhile, BPL trustees meet Monday at 3 p.m. to consider the question of whether they would want to keep four doomed branches (Lower Mills, Washington Village in South Boston, Orient Heights and Faneuil in Brighton) open if the city council and library supporters can find the money to support their operations for the coming year. The meeting is in the Orientation Room in the McKim Building at the BPL central library in Copley Square.

Did I make a mistake trusting Verizon?

I've been a loyal Speakeasy DSL customer since forever. But when I went to the support site to see about increasing the speed on our line, I discovered they've decided to concentrate on business users. While I do use DSL for my business (natch), their rates are way more than I want to pay. So I signed up for Verizon DSL - theoretically, way more bandwidth at less cost than what we're paying Speakeasy now.

As part of signing up, I had an online chat with Online Support Dude, who assured me, twice, that Speakeasy and Verizon service could co-exist on the same line until I was happy with the latter and canceled the former.

Yeah, right. Yesterday, around 9 a.m. our DSL service went dead. Didn't think much of it (usually, just means we have to reset the modem), went off to a meeting downtown, where I got e-mail from Verizon congratulating me on selecting them and notifying me that my Verizon DSL service had been turned on (oh, and by the way, the billing meter was now running). Only problem: They hadn't sent out the new modem (it's now supposedly on its way). So now we have no Internet service, but are paying Verizon for the privilege (I'm typing this at Select Cafe in Roslindale, which, granted, is my satellite office anyway; will move my car so I don't get a ticket, then head for the Roslindale BPL).

So I haven't even started using Verizon DSL yet, and I'm already grumpy. Not a good sign.

Rail deal: Worcester Line could go to North Station; Harvard to get vast new amounts of land to do nothing with

The Globe updates us on the deal between the state and CSX to move freight operations from Allston to Worcester and for the state to take over the tracks between here and there.

Among the interesting tidbits: State officials say the deal could mean Worcester service from North Station. And Harvard, which techically owns the land under the Allston yards, will be able to develop the land - or just let it sit there until surrounding neighbors get old and die.
