Two dead, three injured in East Boston fire

UPDATE: Cause determined to be faulty extension cord shorting out.

The Boston Fire Department reports the fire broke out around 2:40 a.m. at 64 Gove St.

Firefighters found the body of a man on the first floor of the three-story building, the department says. A woman on the third floor suffered a heart attack and died at Mass. General. Two other residents suffered burns and smoke inhalation, while one firefighter suffered a shoulder injury.

The deaths are Boston's first fire-related fatalities since December, 2008.

The department says it is still investigating the cause of the fire, which it says caused an estimated $250,000 in damage.

Mike Rush speaks, sorta, about the probation scandal involving his father

The West Roxbury state rep and would-be Marian Walsh replacement issues a statement to Wicked Local West Roxbury that basically says he's innocent, but can't say more because "I was questioned concerning a civil lawsuit against the state involving my dad and the trial court."

Transforming an East Boston park

Elliott Haney works for City Year. He reports that when he and other volunteers went to clean up and repaint a small East Boston park, some bystanders cautioned them against erasing the large "M.A.D." somebody had spray painted on one wall in honor of a local guy murdered in 1984. They decided to incorporate his name into a mural. And it all paid off with one nearby resident's reaction:

... He walked into the park as I was sitting there, and his jaw just dropped. It was like in a comic book; it literally dropped and he just stood there, staring all around. He turned to me and said "This couldn't be more beautiful..." He started walking around just taking it all in, then he walked towards the court. He stopped suddenly, turned to me and started walking back. As he got closer, I could see tears on his face. The man was a childhood friend of Michael Anthony D'Avella. He was crying to me, a complete stranger, thanking me for making the M.A.D. memory live on so beautifully. He choked through numerous 'thank yous' but then he couldn't speak anymore… he shook my hand, and he walked out of the park, taken over by emotions and his memories that we helped to preserve. ...

What if there were a Green Line stop at Porter Square?

With the Green Line extension bringing the Green Line a lot closer to the square, it could happen. OK, in the far, far future, Cambridge Day reports.
