When people rode through Roslindale and West Roxbury in a barrel

Why can't we have things like this now?

From a discussion of the Washington Street trolley and the car barns that sat where the Domino's by the parkway is now.

Yes, that sign just told you to rip an ear bud out

State Police and the state Department of Transportation are using electronic signboards to get people with ear buds to take one out - so they can hear that ambulance coming up behind them and not risk getting a ticket:

The use of only one earpiece is acceptable under current Massachusetts law. Frankly, there is no legitimate reason for an operator to be wearing both headphones while driving. The campaign is to inform the public that wearing both headphones or “ear buds” is unnecessary and unlawful. This is a primary offense allowing police to stop and cite motorists when they’re observed to be wearing both pieces in their ears while operating a motor vehicle.

Menorah at Northeastern vandalized

UPDATE, 3:20 p.m: Northeastern says two students "have accepted responsibility for vandalizing the university's Menorah" and that they now face disciplinary action. Still no word on just what they did.

Northeastern President Joseph Aoun alerted his campus in e-mail this morning. He didn't specify just how the Krentzman Quad menorah was damaged, but said it's been repaired and that campus police are hunting suspects. His e-mail:

To all members of the Northeastern community:

Early this morning, a deeply disturbing incident occurred that is an affront to our university community and the values we stand for. At approximately 1:00 am, the campus Menorah on display in Krenztman Quad was vandalized.

This kind of hateful act is completely unacceptable and has no place in our community. Our Public Safety division is actively investigating this incident, and we will do all we can to identify and punish those who are responsible. We have taken immediate action to repair the Menorah and it is now back on display.

Northeastern's deep and abiding commitment to diversity in all its forms—including religious diversity - is unwavering. This disturbing incident should be an opportunity to strengthen – rather than weaken – our dedication to this deeply important value.

Every day - and especially during this season of religious observance – it is vital that we show our commitment to mutual respect and diversity. These are the values that define and enrich our community, and no act of intolerance can ever undermine that.

The vandalism took place a few hours after Christmas trees in the quad were lit for the season.

Two new beer and wine licenses approved in South Boston

The Boston Licensing Board yesterday approved requests from a high-end deli and an art studio to sell beer and wine.

American Provisions on East Broadway won the right to sell "artisan" wine and craft beers, although it could face further opposition fron a liquor store across the street, whose owner has hired a lawyer to fight the deli's alcohol bid.

Urban Art Bar on Old Colony Avenue won the right to serve beer, wine and cordials to people taking its evening art classes.

Finally: A neighborhood welcomes late-night Domino's delivery with open arms

The Boston Licensing Board yesterday approved a request from Domino's to extend the delivery hours of its Staniford Street outlet from 1 a.m. to 3 a.m. because of near-unanimous support from West End resident groups and nearby businesses - a dramatic difference from the reception Domino's has gotten in certain other neighborhoods.

Two hotels and Mass. Eye and Ear both supported the Domino's request, saying their customers and workers both require pizza late at night. Mass. General acknowledged its overnight workers often partake of Domino's fare, but refuses to formally support licensing requests, William Mohan, a Domino's rep, told the board.

Mohan said the later hours would ease pressures on existing late-night Domino's in other parts of the city, which he said now struggle to keep up the demand from the small neighborhood.

The main opposition at a board hearing on Wednesday came from the mayor's office, which wanted the board to delay action until after Domino's could meet with civic groups in neighboring Beacon Hill. A mayor's liaison said her office is concerned that later pizza delivery would only encourage Suffolk students living on Beacon Hill to party hardier later into the night.

She added the city is also concerned about driver safety, citing a recent attack on a late-night pizza delivery guy. When Mohan said he was unaware of any such incidents, she acknowledged it had happened in Dorchester.
