Roslindale's Fenwick Smith Has Died

Former BSO flutist and Roslindale resident Fenwick Smith died last week. An Internet archive provides a glimpse of Mr. Smith's involvement in the rejuvenation of Roslindale Square, as reported by The Boston Phoenix in July 2001.

Local Campaign Jumps the Gun

State Rep candidate and former mayoral candidate Charles Clemons Muhammad (that's how his tiny sign reads) was spotted on Monday morning inside the Forest Hills MBTA station. Dressed nattily in an expensive-looking suit, he chased after T patrons who probably weren't in the mood for a good chat on the issues during their morning commutes...in the middle of a heat wave.

In doing so, Clemons may have violated an unwritten rule regarding how the start of local campaigning begins the first week of August...or is it after Labor Day?

Bennett sighting

On Friday, August 1, I had some business at Boston City Hall in the early morning. Imagine my surprise and disgust to see none other than Doug Bennett strolling out as I was heading in.

He was smiling his wide, toothy smile, wearing a Scally cap, and walking with all the confidence of a veteran candidate for public office in multiple jurisdictions.

I suppose that I've finally recovered from this shocker, seeing how I can write about it now. They say writing is therapeutic; well, I'm a believer.

Happy primary season!

Drug Culture at The Boston Globe?

"Blount smokes Bills; Patriots roll" is (or was) the headline for a story at Boston.com about yesterday's Pats victory:

Well, at least we know what they're smoking over at 135 Morrissey Boulevard...

Sour Notes at Carnegie Hall

The famous non-profit organization is suffering at the (stage)hands of LocalOne.

See below for a couple of takes on the situation.

One resident of Dorchester—in fact, a contributor of sorts to UHub—has announced his candidacy.

Mayoral Campaign 2013: The theme songs

Felix Arroyo's campaign seems to have "Si Se Puede" as its theme song. Well, if his campaign can have one, maybe other mayoral campaigns could come up with one, too. But campaign staffers likely have other work on their minds, so what follows are just a few ideas.

Let's see if we can have fun with this. Got one to offer? If you decide to pitch in, please follow this format:

Candidate, Song Title, Performer
--Connection to Candidate or Campaign

So for Arroyo, we have:
