Traffic reporter Scott Eck is calling this a chaotic afternoon, with drivers on many local roads just not moving.

One of the worst is Memorial Drive, which is at a complete standstill. Where, specifically? Pretty much from one end to the other.

Goateed gunman arrested in Cambridge

Cambridge Police report arresting the man they say held up two convenience stores at gunpoint earlier this week.

Richard Perry, 41, of Somerville, was nabbed in Jamaica Plan by Cambridge officers with the help of Boston Police and the US Marshal's service.

Police say Perry stuck up a Cambridge Street store on Jan. 20, making off with $700 he ordered a clerk to put in a plastic bag, and then robbed $100 from a Walden Street store the next day.

Central Square crush on the MBTA Red Line

Bill Palin shows us the scene at Central Square around 9:30 a.m., as passengers wonder if they'll ever get to their destinations due to a train that went to its final destination at Harvard Square.

Coupled with a dead trolley on the Green Line, the Orange Line problems and inexplicably overpacked Blue Line trains, it was a rare superfecta on the T this morning.

Man with goatee wanted in Cambridge

Cambridge Police report they are looking for a man with a goatee and a black handgun who held up a convenience store on Cambridge Street near Hampshire around 1:35 p.m. on Tuesday.

If he looks familiar, you can drop a quarter to Det. Dennis Marshall at 617-349-9391.

Cambridge Police are - again - warning Cambridgeport residents of a guy who likes breaking into houses and apartments via windows during the day to steal laptops and other electronics.

In an alert to residents today, police say the burglar typically looks for cut or unlocked screens, then shimmies into houses between 3 and 6 p.m. Since Dec. 23, laptop guy has hit six houses, on Fairmount Avenue and Fairmont , Granite, Lopez and Prince streets.

In an earlier warning, in October, police posted a photo of a possible suspect.

Two separate natural-gas incidents sent Cambridge firefighters scrambling along Mass. Ave., from Albany Street to Brookline Street.

Around 11:30 p.m., a gas main began leaking at Albany Street, possibly because a construction crew hit it. Then, around the same time, firefighters had to evacuate 8 Brookline St., several blocks away, due to high gas readings.

Cambridge Day reports what it knows about possible reuse of the 14-acre Volpe Transportation Center parcel in Kendall Square, which could include zoning for buildings up to 300 feet high. But both the federal government, which owns the land, and city planners, have turned very shy.

CFD Ladder 1 reports what turned into a two-alarm fire erupted at 228 Broadway shortly after 3 a.m.

Neal Doyle reports the two businesses - Beauty's Pizza and MuLan Taiwanese Restaurant - both appeared this morning to have been totally destroyed.

UPDATE, 7 p.m. Boston Fire reports no body found.

State Police have shut the Anderson Bridge between JFK Street in Cambridge and North Harvard Street in Allston so firefighters can comb the Charles for somebody a 911 caller said jumped into the river around 5 p.m.

NECN reports the driver, who picked up a woman on Tremont Street in Boston, was arraigned in Cambridge District Court in connection with a Dec. 6 incident.
