Most awful confirmed rumor of the day
By adamg on Sun, 04/22/2007 - 1:34pm
Update: It's true - see Jonelle's comment below.
The Greenhouse in Harvard Square is closing today.
What?!? How can they close the Greenhouse? Wasn't the Tasty enough for you people?!? Bastards! I'm sure the Square needs another stupid store where they have exactly three pairs of shoes, all $100+, surrounded by acres of bleached wood and rail-thin sales girls with enough attitude to melt steel. What? Me bitter?
No more, sniff! And this is now just a memory.
Anyway, anybody know for sure?

Closing of the Greenhouse??
Oh, my gosh!! What a drag. I go there on occasion--they've got excellent pancakes-yum yum, not to mention sinful desserts, and frappes, etc. I'll miss them. Oh, well.
It's too bad that Harvard Square's funky ethnic stores/restaurants have gone the way of more expensive stuff. bummer.
Greenhouse
Honestly, I find it a wonder that the Greenhouse remained open this long. I've gone there a few times and pretty much never had a good experience. The service is slow and rude, the food is just mediocre, they won't yet you use their bathroom, and they charge you for refills without asking. I do like having a diner-type place in Harvard Square, but they couldn't get away with this service forever!
'Tis true
I just called them up -- today's their last day. According to the harried-sounding woman on the phone, they've been evicted.
Say what you will about the prices and the service but I have fond memories of the place -- and I don't even want to think about how many cottage fries I consumed there. Damn, those fries were magical.
Ouch!!
They've been evicted? I guess this really is the end of an era for sure. The French fries were quite good--crisp and not greasy, although I didn't consume them that often. Their brownies, chile-con-carne and their chocolate 3-layer cakes were...mmmmmm!!
Karma's a b----
I can't say I'm shedding a tear. Nearly a year ago to the day, I fainted in Harvard Square one evening right by The Greenhouse and ended up with a minor head injury. While the paramedics were attending to me, I really needed to use a restroom, and so the paramedics and I went into The Greenhouse. The manager and staff there couldn't have been nastier when (literally) yelling their refusing to let me use their WC...even w/ the horrified paramedics by my side. While I'm equally dismayed that the Square's turning into a mall, I'm not sad to see them go.
When mgt and waitstaff are that unsympathetic to somebody
who is clearly undergoing crisis and is in a state of emergency, that's about as low as people can get, imo. Disgusting, to boot! The manager and waitstaff at Greenhouse should've been more sensitive to your predicament and made allowances in this instance! Shame on them!! How appalling! On second thought, given today's dog-eag-dog world, it should come as no surprise.

Yumm
"The end result was that a week after the oven broke one time we were trying to sell people cake with ants on it."
WHAT?!?!?
Is this just snark, or are this serious? (lol)
Mr. Crepe Again?
Now I remember why it has been so long since I bothered to care about Harvard Square. Beyond the Garage, there ain't much to care about.
The Someday closing was something to cry about, second only to the original proprietor's passing. I think we should start "haunting" places that take over evicted institutions - putting up evocative things like trail blazer stickers from the late 80s and "no restrooms" and such.
Harvard Square - still worthwhile
Yeah, the Square's not what it used to be, but it still has plenty of things you won't find anywhere else:
Brattle Theatre
Harvard Film Archive
Cambridge Center for Adult Education/Blacksmith House
Club Passim
Harvard Book Store
Globe Corner Bookstore
the only T-accessible IHOP
Cambridge Forum
lectures at the JFK School of Government
concerts at Sanders Theatre
This is what Harvard Square has been reduced to?
All excellent reasons for not reducing Harvard Square to rubble, except:
the only T-accessible IHOP
I guess, if you need pancakes at 3 p.m., but hardly a bulwark against the return of the Dark Ages, I'd think. Then again, I'm sad there's no longer a T-accessible McDonald's in Coolidge Corner (thank goodness there's still a T-accessible JP Licks there!), so one man's poison and all that ...
Trust me.
There are times when a fellow has an urgent need for pancakes at 3:00 pm.
And that's all I should maybe say about that.
Good points, Ron.
Thanks.
All I can say is...
...they made one mean Greek Salad. It was enormous and cost like $3.50 or something.
Greenhouse
Somehow I've managed to live here for 26 years without ever going there (even while working at the Coop for a year in the mid-80s), but from the comments it sounds like I didn't miss much. Regardless of how you felt about the place, it's a reminder that we should enjoy things while we can.
