Science Park station to get elevators, better lighting
By adamg on Thu, 05/27/2010 - 12:46pm
MBTA officials will gather at the Science Park/West End Green Line station today to announce a $22-million project to outfit the station with two new elevators, along with a new lobby and mezzanine. The work will bring the station, built in 1954, into compliance with the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. The project, scheduled for completion in the spring of 2012, will also include better lighting and more surveillance cameras.

Can we have the pedestrian bridge back?
Pretty please?
Bridge
Why was it taken down?
Bridges were removed during Big Dig construction
Big Dig construction was extensive in Leverett Circle (and even beyond it onto Storrow Drive), and the pedestrian bridges were in the way.
Now that they're gone, do people really miss them that much? I never hear anyone lament the loss of the pedestrian bridges at nearby (and similar) Charles Circle.
The bridges are missed
It's a pain to cross from Science Park to the science museum across the intersection. Keep in mind how many groups of small children are being shuffled through the traffic there on a daily basis now that the bridge is gone.
it's mixed
I've gotten used to not having the bridge. It's convenient if you're crossing with the bridge. You avoid the traffic lights, but the ramps are going to add time to cross. And proposed bridge will go form state police to science park to west end. So if you're crossing from state police to west end, you'll have a longer walk. And still no bridge from state police to the park.
I was upset when the bridge was torn down - but now that it's gone I'll live without it. Do we really need to spend the 4 mil to rebuild it?
Bridge could have both ramps and steps
It obviously needs to have ramps for ADA compliance, but it could also have steps that provide a shorter walk for people who can use them.
could, but doesn't
In the rendition I saw, I don't believe there are stairs... (I can't find the image this second...)

Update on the bridge
MassDOT will be be scheduling a community meeting on whether to bring the bridge back. So no immediate answer.
pedestrian bridge
I moved to Boston in September 2009, and the first time I took the T to Science Park and walked over to the museum, my first thought was, "why the hell isn't there a pedestrian bridge to the museum?" I never knew one existed in the past; it just seemed like the logical thing to have there. With the amount of children and strollers that cross the intersection, it would be better for pedestrians and cars.
