Teamsters find tasty way to picket Dunkin' Donuts

A user on Davis Square LiveJournal reports that when he got to the Dunkin' Donuts on Main Street in Medford this morning, Teamsters were outside, handing out donuts to try to keep people from going into the store. The Teamsters have no issue with Dunkin' Donuts but are embroiled in a contract dispute with one of the chain's Boston-area suppliers.

Donuts with a Difference is right there, and Demet's is right down the street.

Donuts with a Difference is fine if you just want a donut and/or coffee, but we had a hankering for some breakfast sandwiches and Coolatas, and no pamphlet's going to stop me from going in, no matter HOW glossy the paper is (and let me tell you, it was GLOSSY. they spared no expense with these flyers).

If the unions have a problem with Dunkin Donuts' "supplier," then all they need to do to make a big impact is boycott the supplier. Which means, boycott Dunkin Donuts. Can anyone imagine a construction site devoid of any patronage of Dunkin's? There'd be a noticeable drop in DD sales as well as their cups littered all over the ground.

The DDs I've been in early in the morning do heavy traffic, mostly construction and DPW workers. If their unions all boycotted, DD would take notice.

Federal labor law prohibits unions from organizing a 'secondary boycott' against a company that is doing business with the employer. I'm not sure how or whether this law applies to the situation at hand -- anyone here know more?

So unions can do sympathy strikes, but not secondary boycotts. That's odd, IMO.
