How do you even get on that thing?

High bike

Leslee watched bicyclists on some sort of protest ride down Newbury Street on Saturday (she wonders who they were).

They may have been part of either SCUL or a more obscure bicycle gang in Jamaica Plain called the 'Christkickers'.

As Critical Mass pedaled by Occupy Boston.

Intergalactic Critical Mass? Please tell me they celebrated by drinking some Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters.

Despite my comprehensive flowchart, It's difficult to keep track of the various advocacy groups, bicycle advocacy groups included.

It appears that Intergalactic Critical Mass is about several rides occurring abound the US and Europe(or Galaxy as it's sometimes referred to).

For some afternoon humor be sure to visit their website:

http://intergalacticboston.wordpress.com/

Here's a hint of what you're in store for:

We hope to link the event to various social and environmental projects in the area by asking for various groups to set up Critical Mass related events (panels, film screenings, bike rides, races, workshops etc.). We hope these events will draw attention to the intersectionality of social and environmental issues and be a tool for building power between local movements.
In this way we hope to re-expose the radical roots of Critical Mass as a social movement and not just another ride.

For extra credit read the "about us" section and learn how this cabal is conspiring to eliminate automobiles from Cities.

but Hipsters really bug me. I can't explain it on a rational basis, but things like this (adjusting a bike to be even less safe, just to get attention) get my goad. And remind me to take my Metamucil and yell at the kids out front to stay off my lawn.

I'm trying to get a grip on which hipster beards are "ironic" and which are simply facial hair.

Can I get a little help from any experts here?

I ride bikes like that. I'm not a hipster, and I'm not cool. It's just really, really fun. You know when you were a kid and you learned how to ride a bike for the first time without training wheels? and all of a sudden you're just gliding along, feeling giddy and magical? It's like that, but with a way better view.

sure, some people do it for attention, but most people who make and ride these bikes do it because it's the kind of silly pleasure that helps us balance out work stress and/ or daily grind.

I also get cranky at the damn kids on my lawn. but you'll pry my fun bicycle from my cold, dead hands (after an angry driver decides to mow me down for riding in the street).

If he's going to be riding a bike with a seat that's what, 6' off the ground, at least he has the good sense to wear a helmet.

The real problem is that he can't stop that thing. He rides around Porter Square and has to just blow through every intersection, unless he can get his hand on a fence to brace himself. He's a menace.

i've seen the guy on the tall bike riding around JP. I keep hoping he will ride that thing thru a carwash or something; he looks even filthier in person.

When is it a filthy hippy and when is it a hipster? Will hipsters eventually sail on to the latest fashion fad and filthy hippies remain like crabs at low tide or are hipsters here to stay? What do you call the ironic people without thick frame glasses, skinny jeans or beards? Is a non-ironic hipster simply a filthy hippy? ...how do people keep these stereotypes straight???

Hippie is a timeless way of being. Hipsters are trendy and annoying. Why would someone want to walk around being "ironic" all day long? It must become tiring after a while. Irony should be used sparingly.

does every city in america have a "that guy who welded two bikes together into a really tall bike"?

I'm 3 for 3 going back to about 1995 or so

I don't think SCUL keeps this list up-to-date (I've found several dead links), but enjoy:

and he's not a hipster. We just like tallbikes. Ride one and you'll get it. If you don't, you won't. They're big, not safe, fun, not hip, and could take a door off a car.

Regular bikes going faster are WAY better at taking off car doors than tallbikes are, that and cargo bikes.
*IF* you are stupid enough to be into that sort of thing.
Cars are even better at taking a door off a car. Buy one!

Tallbikes are a pain in the ass unless you can handle the attention.
Fun as [term for fecal matter] without that.
If you can let it roll off your back, they're pretty wonderful bikes.
