I Finally know one of these Boston City Archive pics
That is most definitely the park on Intervale and Magnolia street off of Columbia Rd.
currently home to
a burger king...
Definitely.
Definitely. http://goo.gl/maps/9O6CE
Was thinking Columbia Road,
Was thinking Columbia Road, too. One of the few places in Boston where a three-decker and a brick apartment building exist side-by side.
Intervale Street - Dorchester
Round about 1972 based on the shoes. Gotta be the shoes!
Yup, that's definitely Intervale Street.
One of my buyers is in the process of buying 137 Intervale Street, which is in the picture, and Bank of America has been a nightmare to deal with.
washington st and columbia

Ceylon Park
Ceylon Park in Grove Hall (Magnolia St. at Intervale St.). Mid-70's?

Bad Timing

unlike the Seaport District
this neighborhood has not changed much :(
Try again.
The neighborhood is noticeably different, and nicer.
Nicer?
Yeah, all the Yuppies are rushing to move there.
Yeah, nicer.
Half the crime rate from when this shot was taken, TONS of residential development in the area...filling in of vacant lots, etc. etc. If you think Grove Hall is bad now, you should ask folks from back then. Those were hard times compared to now my friend.
Dorchester
That is across the street from Castlegate... Burger King Parking lot... Columbia and Washington...
no!!! this is Intervale and
no!!! this is Intervale and Magnolia
St.. Ceylon Park
Not Columbia road
The Burger King on Columbia road has a church behind it and used to have an ice skating rink that has since been turned into BDs department store. Not sure where this is but it's not there.
Louisburg Square?
Before the landscaping?
Definitely
Definitely Magnolia-Intervale.
Trying to decide on the car in the bg - that a Pinto?
Definitely a Ford
But maybe a Maverick?
Boston looks infinitely better now
than it did back in the 70s. The urban decay was bad. Boarded up blocks. Huge arson problem resulting in abandoned and vacant lots. And if people think, for example, the southwest corridor running along Columbus ave looks pretty good now, they should have seen it back then. It was a waste land for miles. It took decades for the new subway, park and redevelopment to occur. There's no comparison to the 70s-80s and today.
Current Google street view on
Current Google street view on Magnolia in front of the park shows a group of teenagers, one of whom is wearing a "Grove Hall Basketball" shirt while throwing up some type of gang signs.
