City bans parties at MIT frats

The Globe reports Boston officials have banned big gatherings at MIT Greek houses, mainly due to that kid falling through a skylight at one fraternity.

Don't worry, they'll engineer
Don't worry, they'll engineer a solution. Webcams hooked up to large flat screens so the party can be spread out among several houses. People moving back and forth while maintaining the per house limit and still able to see what's going on at the other parties.
It seems to me they will just
It seems to me they will just go to other neighborhood parties, making those parties bigger and more of a problem.
Or make the Independent Living Groups an offer
I was wondering if this extended to the independent houses that are MIT affiliated? If not, the frats might try to make a deal (not that said independents would take them up on it - when a frat got disciplined in the late 80s, they tried my ILG but we decided it was too risky).
Yup. Boston doesn't
Yup. Boston doesn't distinguish between frats and ILGs.
You gotta fight for your right

This is stupid.
And a blatant overreaction zeroing in on Greek organizations as a whole based on, and further perpetuating, stereotypes. The only thing they got right here was this:
"The frat house was issued several citations and officials announced they plan to crackdown on other potentially unsafe off-campus properties."
And if I was an administrator at MIT, I'd be pissed that only a certain subset of a lone institution was being singled out. But hey, at least it takes the heat off of Allston slumlords for a while.
Agreed, this is assinine
Tommy has always had a bug up his butt about both MIT and fraternities. Even though the majority of Boston-based MIT living groups are safely and responsibly run, and have never had a run-in with the city, his administration has always painted the whole group with a single broad brush.
I consider this his final "FU" to some of the longest continually property-tax-paying organizations in the city. And yet another rebuff to a population of young people who are likely to be early high wage earners/successful entrepenuers.
Well
except for the time in 2003 when one of the MIT brownstones on upper Bay State Road (closer to BU than Kenmore) caught on fire and turned into a gigantic fireball, because of "incense". BU had to evacuate the adjacent brownstones until the situation was secured.
As sad as that is
2 (unrelated) incidents in 10 years? That's a pretty good record, especially considering the 2003 incident could happen to anyone. There have been more fires in college housing units with no official connection to any organizations this year alone.

This is a rather ridiculous
This is a rather ridiculous rule.
If everyone in the frat is home, a member can't have a friend come over to work on homework?
MIT imposed a much more reasonable temporary rule on groups outside Boston: three times the residential occupancy.
