Shirley Temple in the Public Garden
By adamg on Tue, 02/11/2014 - 7:32am
The BPL has a collection of Leslie Jones photos of Shirley Temple's visit to Boston in July, 1938, including her walk through the Public Garden, where she took a Swan Boat ride.
As you can imagine, she was crowded pretty much everywhere she went:
Although the photos all show her smiling, it was not the best of trips for her: She was almost crushed by the crowd in the Public Garden. And in a visit later in the week to the Charlestown Navy Yard, her chauffeur accidentally slammed a car door on her hand, injuring three fingers.
Shirley Temple Black died Monday. She was 85.

Don't call me Shirley

Ted Striker: Surely you can't be serious.
Rumack: I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.
RIP Shirley Temple!

Shady swans
When did they take the awnings off the swan boats? I don't remember them being there in the 60s and 70s when I was a kid.
On the hottest days
Awnings were still put on the boats in the hottest days when I worked there in the late 1980's. They acted like a sail and helped moved the boat a bit if the wind kicked up.
I always loved Shirley even
I always loved Shirley even though I'm not quite as old. Her autobiography was very interesting.
I think my father had a childhood crush on her...
... as he is just about the same age. ;~}
