De-Meninoization at City Hall, slush fund at BPS

The Herald reports Hizzona has fired eight city managers whose ties to Menino were just a bit too obvious.

The Globe reports BPS used to funnel money into a fund from which administrators could dip into without any oversight by city accountants; a practice BPS says it's since ended.

Don't believe everything you read I guess.

This is a good example of how beneficial a change of administration can be, just in terms of clearing out insider arrangements.

Revenues from bus and building rentals, sales of old assets etc. not going back into the school system, but instead a private entity is very troubling. My bet is nobody will go to jail even though they should.

Don't worry our current and future AGs will be right on it....

Many communities do this in different ways. Medford's mayor has his own fund where he collects "contributions" by shaking down contractors and developers for "impact fees" and then buys whatever he wants from it without the City Council getting to vote on the pony ride expenditure, etc.

I don't think it is right, either - but it is certainly a very common loophole to have these administrative slush funds filled up from random sources.

On the other hand, it might be desirable for certain positions to have discretionary funds that are transparently administered. These might be necessary for stuff that crops up (like "have to replace a bunch of plumbing after a freeze event" and the like).

so, does that mean that the young Italian guy who drives the battered old Boston Police Dept. pick-up truck to the West Roxbury Little League complex and yells at people, will stop it?

"I have two young children and now I have no job."

....and you were making $100k/year, which is plenty of money to have been saving up for emergencies such as losing your job.

That there are people who make a lot more than 100K a year essentially live paycheck to paycheck. Sorry, but I was just reading about Leo Messi, and he has been smart enough to sock away most of his millions for when he can no longer play soccer, and it does remind me that pro athletes spend a soon as they get.

But yeah, people lose their jobs all the time. There's unemployment for that, and if you do have some skills, you should land on your feet. My gut is that she ends up working for Casella or has begun to kiss up to Baker with the hopes of a position in an environmental field that does not involve being in the field.

Why such a harsh response? What if she has been doing her job all along and this was a complete surprise? One stream recycling has been a success in Boston as well as getting schools on board. If you had been doing your job, put in 20 years in city retirement and are essentially fired you'd feel blindsided. It doesn't seem like she was a political appointment, yet Walsh clearing house of people in positions might be... who fills these positions? Will Walsh choose people who it is perceived he owes favors? Like appointing Arroyo Chief of Health and Human Services, who has little experience in the health field to oversee competent, far more experienced people (ie Barbara Ferrerr) with relevant backgrounds? (Wonder if that's part of the reason she left her position as Executive Director of the Boston Public Health Commission.) Time will tell.

... that in many of these cases, our new Mayor has particular buddies in mind to fill the abruptly vacated slots.

why did he stop at eight? Get rid of them all.

Get rid of the entire workforce of the City of Boston?

And that is why you are an "anon (not verified)"

If no one knew the position existed in the first place odds are there was no need for it to exist period!

The one people are mocking- she was in charge of recycling programs. Are you saying we should get rid of the entire sanitation division, so no one is overseeing our trash removal?

I have no problem with Marty getting rid of Menino's people, as long as union and civil service rights are respected, but even the most political politician knows you can't just fire everyone.

So a job is only valuable if the general public (or more specifically you) have heard of it and know the title? That's a treat. You need to work on the "making sense" aspect of arguments.
