The folks at the Boston City Archives wonder if you can place this photo. See it larger.

I'm going to take a wild guess, based on the address on the "Wallace's" sign:

115 Hanover Street

Interesting that Washington Went further than it did today to basically become Congress Street.

Washington Street once extended through what is now City Hall to Haymarket Square, where it met North Washington Street (or "Washington Street North") going across the bridge into Charlestown. The segment between Adams Square and Haymarket Square was opened in November 1872.

All of the streets in the Government Center area were relocated by urban renewal in the 1960s. Devonshire Street, for example, continued north of State Street; but Congress Street did not extend north of State. The stub of "Washington Mall" — now a pedestrian way from State Street to the side entrance of new City Hall — remains as part of the former Washington Street.

At one time you could get on North Washington Street at City Square in Charlestown and travel on "Washington Streets" — sometimes with North or South as part of the name — all the way to the Rhode Island border in South Attleboro.

Speaking of shoes, is there anyone that shines shoes down near Downtown crossing or near Back Bay?

There's a shoeshine stand in South Station. Closer to DTX, the shoe repair place on Province Street across from Cafe Marlieve (right off Bromfield Street) also shines shoes.

In 500 Boylston Street, in the arcade/corridor near Marshall's back door. Nice guy, been there forever.

Right across the corridor from the Starbucks, inside the building. I believe they do shoe repair, too.

South Station if that's close enough.

An absolutely charming man and an avid golfer. With a great shine to boot!

Inside - basically walk through city sports and out the back door - his stand is in the hallway.

Boston City Archives decline to acquire Stenograph Record of Public Meetings of Boston City Council. Contrary to the Mission/Mandate/Policies/Practices of Archives Historic Preservation of Boston History. Public funds for producing the Stenograph Record squandered by faulty preservation practices.
