The folks at the Boston City Archives wonder if you can place this photo. See it larger.

Is that an armory in the distance?
T Tower
It appears to be a switch tower on the elevated railway. I'm guessing the Dover Street tower (East Berkley St.)

Looks like Dudley Station in the background.
Intersection of Commercial
Intersection of Commercial and North Washington Sts. between 1899-1901?
The elevated tracks are curving away from the foreground (perhaps towards North Station). The turrets in the background could belong to the neighboring Fitchburg Railroad terminal, and the Atlantic Ave el, which should be passing over the photographer, might still be under construction.
Probably wrong but...
My first reaction was that this is Cambridge St near Mass General, looking towards the river.
Sort of this view today.
No architectural evidence that this is right, other than there are still train tracks ahead.

Causeway Street at Medford
Causeway Street at Medford Street. The tower on the right is the old Lowell rail depot prior to the first North Union Station. Maybe taken during the start of construction of the Atlantic Ave El?
My first response was similar
My first response was similar to Gary C's . That general (no pun intended) area.... Maybe Charles St.?
Isn't the big wall on the
Isn't the big wall on the left the prison which is now the Liberty Hotel? Then the overpass is MGH Station? That would place the Charles River on the right side of the photo and this will be looking towards Charles Street?
Kearney Sq
The little whitish shack seems to be in both pictures

Interesting picture
Yay me. A much more interesting picture: http://www.shorpy.com/node/10056?size=_original#caption
The Answer
Thanks for playing folks! This is Keany Sq. in 1901. Here's another photo of that area at about the same time, but from a different angle. https://twitter.com/ArchivesBoston/status/697528138574753792
Full archive of Charlestown elevated
The above mentioned picture is in the City Archives Flicker album.

Tower in Background?
Is that the old fireman's tower in the background, used for training purposes? If so, I'd say this is some section of the Washington Street El. That tower was in the South End.
Given the horses and such, maybe 1901 or 1902?

Maybe Washington Street near Mass Ave. There was an armory next to city hospital until the 1960s.
