West Roxbury residents can now eat with the Squealing Pig
By adamg on Tue, 05/01/2018 - 3:06pm
Daniel Guzman alerts us that Diarmuid O'Neill is changing the name of his almost eponymous Centre Street restaurant from Eat with Jack O'Neill to the Squealing Pig - the name of the two other restaurants he owns. The mural on the side with the old trolley version of Centre Street and of Dapper O'Neil shaking hands with his former boss James Michael Curley, painted back in the West Roxbury Pub days, remains.

Let's hope they change the menu
And maybe even the owners/managers pretentious demeanor.
In there once,
waited at the bar a long time for a draft beer and a glass of wine, $25. Never went back.
Really?
I don't know if this place is any different than the location in Mission Hill/Brigham Circle but that one is about as far from pretentious as you can get.
Eat at Jacks
Food overpriced and pretentious. Prices overpriced and pretentious. Owner’s trying to pretend something that it’s not. The place was designed to fail, and one thing was certain: few went back there a second time. I must confess I did, but only because I had some gift certificates. I walk by there all the time and seldom see anyone there. He put a ton of money into the physical joint, far more than than they put into the menu or the pricing scheme. Would like to see a real and unpretentious place go in there, as Centre St needs at least one place except for West, with good, real, down-to-earth food with prices to match.
Corrib?
Doesn't get more unpretentious than that, no?
"good, real, down to earth"
like pre-made, frozen, sysco products?
Boston foodie scene is pretty decent, if that bothers you, move out to the suburbs where you can eat at applebees/chilis/olive garden every day of the week.
Not like that
But like Delfinos, Dogwood, West, Sophias, and others, all of which are not bland, not pretentious, and not like Jacks.
Calling youself
A Foodie is about embarrassing as calling Southie SoBo!
Porters
Porters is fantastic. I rather go there then West and Corrib (though both places are good for their own reasons)
Jack's was my favorite
Jack's was my favorite restaurant! Best food and service.
Pigs in West Roxbury
No mention on how Centre st in West Roxbury now has 2 pig named restaurants? Red Eyed Pig and now Squealing Pig...
Oh, true!
Yeah, two pig names, but completely different menus and concepts.
Next up: A bacon place called High on the Hog :-).
Been there a bunch and enjoyed it
Not too many complaints here. Decent menu that changes often and large bar with multiple rooms. Average prices for Boston. Food has been good when I've dined there. And beer and wine list is well done. Wish HP would get a large spot like this place !
Good place
Not sure why the name change but the food there is great and they have a great beer and wine list. Wish there was more tables in the main dining area as the popularity often makes it hard to get a seat and the TVs in the bar are annoying.
( the least offensive "Squealing Pig" video I could find )
Hopefully the food, pricing
Hopefully the food, pricing and service gets better with the name change. We have given this place 4/5 tries and it just isn't worth it. They charged me $4 for one tiny slice of toast and $7 for a half bowl of luke warm porridge that took 30 minutes to get. It wasn't busy. That's pretty much the consistency we have gotten.
I want it to do well so hopefully they will make some necessary changes.
It wont though
What the area desperately needs a family style restaurant. West Rox is full of families and im sure most like myself aren't taking the kids out to have a $15 a plate pasta and sauce dinner.
They've been hinting at this on FB
They are adding a new large pizza oven and are closing for a couple days to install that. I'm assuming that means a bit of a shift in the menu as well. (They currently describe themselves as a "Gastropub" on FB. )
Have had a few nice meals there. I think other posters are expecting this place to be the West Roxbury Pub (a former Corrib-like iteration.) Can't West Roxbury have a nice place for dinner and not be called "snobby"?
Yea I never had a horrible time at this place...
I've eaten at a few functions in the bar/room on the left and I found the food to be pretty good, especially the pizza.
The old West Roxbury Pub did have the best chicken fingers though. Man I miss those.
Haha
I've seen the owner tell younger guys to leave (not drunk) as "this is Corrib."
I've never heard anyone call
I've never heard anyone call it "snobby." Just that the food and service weren't great for the price.
$1 oysters
I was hoping to pop in to try their promotion - Thursday nights (only at the bar) to try the $1 oysters. Now it may be too late.
I wanted to like it.
The owners did a really good job with the interior, for sure.
But the handful of times that I went, both the service and the food were inconsistent.
I'm optimistic about this new incarnation, though. I've always had fun at the Squealing Pig on Mission Hill...maybe some of that vibe will rub off here?
ETA: Where is there another Squealing Pig besides Mission Hill? Adam, you say two other restaurants with that name.
Red Eyed Pig
On Centre St.
No...wrong Pig
The owners of the Squealing Pig do not own the Red Eyed Pig.
The person below answered my question.
I think he owns the one in p
I think he owns the one in p-town as well...

Tavern at the End of the World
In Charlestown is another he owns. Same menu as the pig.
I want to like it..
...but the food imo, is just not worth the cost. It is a nice bar and I have never had anything but good service to be honest (although maybe a bit slow). I am hoping like others that this kind of becomes more of a solid pub
Poor Service
Went to brunch the service is extremely poor at the West Roxbury Location. 45 minutes just to get a cup of coffee.
Talked the manager who was condescending and unhelpful.
The restaurant was not at all busy less than half tables occupied so no excuse for such poor service
Looking Forward to the Change
My wife and I ate with Jack about a dozen times over the past 2 years. It was sometimes really good (when they first opened they had Scotch Eggs that were to die for), and some of the items on their menu were reproducibly excellent (any fish item, and the beef kabobs were always really good).
I don't get the comments on price, it's cheaper than West by 2X and on a par with Porter. But I think they tried to do too much. The Sunday Roast was easily the worst roast I ever had, the soles of my dress shoes would have been more tender. It took them nearly a year from concept to actually having functional pizza ovens. The thing that bugged me the most is that they had a continually rotating menu of good draft beers, but the bartenders and servers often couldn't tell you what they were. They need to print a small draft beer menu **every day** if they want beer fanatics to enjoy coming to their pub.
When I was a grad student in the Longwood Medical Area I remember enjoying going to the Roxbury Squealing Pig. Good menu, friendly staff. I was really suprised to find out that Jack was the owner of the Pigs. I know that locals in Provincetown were not fond of the Pig that opened there, for various reasons primarily associated with management. But if what they do in West Rox is as good as what they managed in Roxbury, it will be an upgrade over the current configuration.
