Who was protesting that new South End restaurant and why?

On Chowhound, Winstont reports a rather large crowd protesting outside the still unopened Stephanie's on Tremont Street this morning.

For the uninitiated, that would be Stephanie's, as in Stephanie's on Newbury. No idea why there would be a protest, except that most folks seem to find the Newbury Street original to be a terrible restaurant that survives on tourists and its large patio, so maybe some South Enders don't want more of the same imported to their neighborhood.

Yes, I am uninitiated in the mysterious ways of Back Bay and South End restaurants. And I've never heard anybody refer to Geoffrey's (which, come to think of it, started in the South End before moving to Roslindale) as Jeffies.

Heck, I didn't know what they were talking about either till I went and looked at your linked post. And I agree, seems sort of childish to call the place "Steffies."

Hey, any idea why I'm not being allowed to edit my original comment up above?

Once someone else comments on your comment it closes the oppurtunity to edit anymore.

Thanks for the info, Shady!

I had wanted to add that it's folks on Chowhound that don't think much of Stephanie's on Newbury. I haven't ever eaten there myself.

Adam - you left out a step in the history of Jeffies - it made a pit stop in the vendome (twice - apparently due to some ownership issues) - but happily rediscovered it in Roslindale about a year ago - back to its proper place as an awesome neighborhood bistro - evolution is a good thing.

Stephanies is a tad pricy but OK for lunch in the nice weather - and if you're a young single guy the place is packed with "girls night outers" in all weather. (from a happily married guy - just trying to spread some valuable info :-))

If Stephanie's is so terrible as you say, then why are they thriving? I've eaten there a few times. The martinis are excellent and the food is fresh and tasty. The only bad meal I've had was brunch on the patio. That was a ripoff, but dinner and lunch are good.

These days, the South End is more yuppy than Newbury Street, so I can't imagine that is what the protest is about!

Stephanie's IS opening up a location on tremont at the old garden of eden location. They may even be calling it Stephi's - I can't remember

Oops - you are absolutely right. It is to be called Stephi's on Tremont. (I did know that Stephanie's was opening a branch in the former GoE space - but thought it was also to be called Stephanie's.)

I haven't heard anyone say they are unhappy with Stephi's on Tremont opening in the neighborhood.

Maybe Chowhound is more attuned or maybe they just made it up.

Anybody notice a giant inflatable rat wandering Tremont today?

I used to work by Newbury and Stephanie's has a good brunch and is fun for happy hour, but I have to agree that the food is mediocre and overpriced for lunch and dinner. I miss the old Harvard Bookstore cafe that used to be there in the early 90s.

As for protestors...is fur murder again?

Yes, fur is indeed murder again - there were protesters in Coolidge Corner on Saturday, picketing the furrier there. But why would they be picketing a not-yet-opened restaurant?

By the way, Adam, just FYI - the ever-vigilant Chowhound moderators noticed Winstont's post and deleted that thread (not actually about food, y'know!) so your link now goes to a page that says "this topic has been deleted."

and always have been.

long live free speech.

PS did ya know they collect those posts then re-sell 'em? Nice work if you can get it.

Glad the topic is deleted. I know Stephanie fairly well, and there was not any protesting yesterday; it was job picketing. There was a bid that went to a private subcontractor instead of a union (the price was over 3x as high), so that's all the fuss. Happens all the time with restaurants/new stores opening.

Stephi's on Tremont is a welcomed addition to the neighborhood for many reasons - adds even more diversity to the dining experience, creates more jobs, and brings great food and cocktails to the table! We should support this great entrepreneurial venture...

MenuPages Boston talked with owner Stephanie Sokolove; she addressed the picketing and the imminent opening of the restaurant.
