Reading between the lines of the Globe gambling survey
By adamg on Sun, 09/30/2007 - 11:01am
Dan Kennedy notices that while the Globe headline indicates most people want casinos, the story actually says most people want casinos as long as they're in the other half of the state:
... In every part of the state, overwhelming majorities do not want a casino built near them. ...
Jimbo notes another result: Only 29% of those surveyed "strongly" supported casinos, with another 24% favoring them "somewhat:"
... I don't see that as an overwhelming mandate. ...

There is an easy solution to this problem. As we all know, Maine used to be part of Massachusetts until 1820. We probably have some sort of residual claim to it. It's a good bet that none of the Massachusians surveyed that live in the one half of the Commonwealth live in Maine, and neither do the ones in the other half of Massachusetts.
This solution gets even better because it makes it much more likely that we will get money from out-of-state, rather than just redistributing it locally. And perhaps we could get some of those Canadians to spend there too, now that we've dropped to their level.
Further, from a Bostonian point of view, there's nothing worth notice outside of 495 (with the exception of Worcester, last outpost of civilization to the west) if even that far away. So it shouldn't disturb any civilized folks either.
I expect that we can all get behind this. So let's put the new Massachusetts casinos in Maine.
Oh, pooh!!
The last thing the Bay State needs is more casinos, imo.
Unwanted Competition
Geesh, how many Bingo games would simply go POOF! if there were other options?
