Police: Blue Hill Ave. restaurant has become a late-night gang hangout

Boston Police and two city councilors today opposed a request by Tasty Caribbean, 388 Blue Hill Ave. to extend its closing hours from midnight to 2 a.m.

Det. John Danilecki of District B-2 told the Boston Licensing Board that the restaurant is already illegally open after midnight and that gang members now congregate in front of the restaurant then, in an area he said already has a gang problem.

Danilecki added that over the past two months, the restaurant has been cited by police officers three times for staying open past its licensed 12 a.m. closing time and that the owner has refused to cooperate with police.

Representatives from the offices of City Councilors Chuck Turner and Sam Yoon also said they oppose any lengthening of hours, because of complaints from nearby residents.

Nobody from the restaurant attended the hearing on its request. The licensing board typically votes on requests the day after hearings.

Then arrest the gang members, and stop punishing the non-criminals who want to eat after midnight.

Seriously, why is everybody who runs this town an idiot and/or corrupt?

I think they're alluding to the fact that the owner is being uncooperative because he supports / or is part of the gang.

If the owner can't keep a handle on his own buissiness, then why give him the legality to operate even later.

All for this one, in this case. He's serving gang members and disrupting the lives of the neighbors.

Then shut the place down.

Or maybe he fears that the gang will attack him and his family, or burn the place down if he cooperates with police, or kicks them out.

Either way it sucks, but it's your lively hood. Don't want to deal with it, then don't deal with operating in that area.

Is you buissiness going to survive if it becomes known as a cesspool gang hangout by being open longer at night? It might, but my guess is you're going to run afoul of the law somewhere along the lines catering to that specific crowd.

Maybe working with police and the community is the better option then looking the other way and asking for something in return.

Worked for South Street Dinner, where residents felt compelled to voice their support for the owner and what he does for the community around there.

What's "that crowd?" What preferences do gang members have for getting some food and a few drinks that regular law-abiding folks in urban areas don't have? Are you actually meaning to say that it's their fault for having gang members there since they didn't go into the white-tablecloths-and-valet-parking-downtown restaurant business instead?

Just checking. Because otherwise, I'd have assumed that "catering to gang members" would mean that the restaurant owner was, say, offering 2-for-1 ammo specials with the seafood plate or listing getaway cars on the wine list or something, and then in that case it would be really obvious why the place should be shut down, and then we wouldn't need to have this discussion, so...

Definitely not racism. Very few regular working people in that area are out that late looking for food on Blue Hill Ave. While the owner is just trying to make money, "that crowd" is a sad fact.

None intended Eeka. Don't know why you're pulling that card.

I was pointing out that both residents and the police don't like this place because gang members are using it as a hang out and the owners are not cooperating with police to fix this big problem, for whatever reason.

How the hell is that Racism?

This isn't about late night food access, but about an owner who can't control his own buissiness that is asking for even more leniency from the city and neighborhood.
