Downtown developer bucks trend; still plans condos in new tower

New buidling on EssexDeveloper Ori Ron told the Boston Civic Design Commission tonight he still plans to build a tower combining condos with retail space at the Dainty Dot parcel at Kingston and Essex streets, where Chinatown meets the Leather District and the Greenway.

Ron also told commission members and nearby residents he would not leave them with another Filene's-type hole: He said he would not tear down the existing Dainty Dot building until he has financing in place to at least build the external frame of the tower.

Ron showed the commission revised plans for the 180-unit building - which already has city approval - that would lower its height from 291 to 261 feet, decrease the number of parking spaces in a garage built into the building's lower floors and do away completely with the skeletal remains of the Dainty Dot building that now sits on the parcel.

Group overseeing Greenway accepts free office space from developer who wants to build tower next to Greenway

Matt Conti reports:

The expanding relationship between developer Donald Chiofaro and the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy has created the perception of a quid pro quo between the two organizations. ...

Chiofaro wants to tear down that garage near the Aquarium and put up a 700-foot skyscraper, of course.

Trees don't grow on trees, you know

Alyk grows weary of all the "but there aren't any trees!" carping about the Greenway; posts a photo of what the Comm. Ave. mall in the Back Bay (you know, tree-lined Comm. Ave.?) looked like in 1872, after it was built.

Oh spray can you see

Fountain

There's this cool new fountain on the Greenway near the Aquarium and Milk Street. It has holes arranged in a series of concentric eccentric circles. At random, water shoots out of a different group of holes. The water rises 10 feet or so, the kids rush over and a ton of water falls on their heads. They do need to cycle down the chlorine a tad, though.

Watching the Greenway fill in

The case for an Armenian genocide memorial on the Greenway

Jen Langley doesn't get why Tom Menino is so opposed to the idea of an Armenian genocide memorial atop the Big Dig:

... There's the Holocaust Memorial and several Irish Potato Famine memorials. There's a Hungarian Revolution Monument. There's an African American History Museum and statues of Leif Eriksson.

Menino helped put a memorial to Sacco and Venzetti in the Boston Public Library!

I truly believe he just doesn't want a big deal about the Armenian Genocide going on in Boston, in a country where our president hasn't honored his pledge to recognize the Genocide. ...
