Back in the day, the land south of Charlestown used to be known as Shawmut. Then the Puritans got sick of the mosquitoes and lack of water in Charlestown and moved south and decided on Sept. 17, 1630 to call their new home Boston, in honor of the town in Lincolnshire where they'd come from.
The oldest document still in possession of the Boston City Archives is the 1634 Town Book, basically a journal of meetings of the town fathers, from which the above excerpt comes (more of that page).

The Bostonian Society took down the lion and the unicorn from the Old State House today for renovations. Jocelyn was there to watch them cage the lion, no doubt to make sure he didn't escape and try to re-assert his royal authority over the colony.

This plaque is embedded in the sidewalk on the Tremont Street side of the Parker House. It's easy to miss - who looks down while walking down that particularly busy sidewalk? - but once you see it, you just know you have to stop and take a look.
And for years, your view was, in fact, of Old North Church, just to the left of City Hall. But now, well, look at what Aaron Helfand saw this morning when he stood on the plaque and looked out:

Phil spent some time the other day sidewalk supervising construction of Piedmont Park Square, which is rising above the site of the Cocoanut Grove disaster. Among the things he spotted was this wire-connector thing mounted on a basement wall.

The nation's oldest commissioned warship goes into drydock for two years of repairs in March.
