Seems our second president would have preferred July 2 as Independence Day, although that would have deprived us of that story about him and Jefferson both dying within hours of each other on the national holiday.

Building's clearly abandoned and mostly boarded up, but the main entrance (amazingly) hasn't had all of its glass broken in yet. The way the upper floors look, seems like it was abandoned a long time ago, but from the first few floors it looks like a fresh closure.
I swear, why would nobody want to use it as the base of their new criminal empire? Looks defendable enough.
Unless it has some dark history inside...

Across the city today, winter-weary Bostonians shed their coats, or, at least, unzipped them a bit as they marveled at temperatures that approached 60.
On Carson Beach in South Boston, Eileen Murphy watched a game of volleyball (a brisk wind aided the windsurfers in Pleasure Bay).

A Jamaica Plain man says the coyote that ran across Quincy Bay the other day is actually Taupaw, his 11-month old Dutch Wolfhound.
Taupaw is lanky, gray, brown and white, is shy, but loves other dogs. And he loves to roam:

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today prosecutors cannot use most of the marijuana found in a man's minivan during a traffic stop in Quincy to prosecute him for possession with intent to distribute, because police didn't have the legal right to search the vehicle in the first place.
The ruling also applies to the man's cell phone, on which officers browsed messages they felt showed evidence the man was conducting drug deals.

The Coast Guard reports the crew of the Cutter Pendant was cutting channels through the ice off Quincy yesterday when all of a sudden a coyote ran in front of the ship.

Updated: Not just anybody can show up to shovel out the Red Line.
The MBTA is working with local unions to get lots of people working to shovel out the Braintree branch of the Red Line tomorrow.
The T contact the Boston Building Trades and the SEIU, who in turn asked members with shovels to show up tomorrow at the Bayside Expo Center for a 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. shift digging out the tracks, which have not been used to carry passengers since the last storm.
They'll be paid $30 an hour.
A T spokesman says the move is part of "an all out snow removal offensive on the Braintree branch tomorrow."

And so it's come to this: With the Braintree leg of the Red Line effectively out of commission since that train got stuck for two hours, the T is turning to Peter Pan, which normally provides bus service to places like Vermont, to help ferry riders between Braintree and JFK/UMass tonight and tomorrow.
In a statement, the Carmen's Union, which represents MBTA bus drivers, says:
