The Times of Israel takes a look at El Al's new Boston-Tel Aviv route and how Massport won it over areas with larger Jewish populations, such as Miami: Lots of Israeli businesses operate here and Massport did a good job convincing El Al Boston is not just some dinky little city. Among those on the first flight today: Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman.

Flavio Leo of Massport discusses jet noise

Massport's Flavio Leo discusses runways and planes.

A City Council hearing today on resident complaints about low-flying jets from Roxbury to Hyde Park and Milton was sort of moot, because the Massport officials who did attend stressed they have nothing to do with deciding which planes fly where or how.

At-large City Councilor Steve Murphy, who lives on Fairmount Hill in Hyde Park had a simple answer: "From this point forward think of us as plaintiffs," he told the Massport officials.

A City Council committee meets Monday with FAA officials to discuss changes in Logan take-off patterns that some councilors say has meant added noise over a stretch of Boston from the South End to Hyde Park.

As if to advertise the hearing, jets taking off from Logan began flying over Roslindale and neighboring areas early this morning. As of 9:40 a.m., they are still coming.

The hearing of the council's Special Committee on Transportation, Public Infrastructure and Investment begins at 1:30 p.m. in the council's fifth-floor chambers in City Hall.

Long line at Logan

As she waited at 1 a.m. today in this long cab line at Logan, Rachael Ringenberg wondered:

Totally makes sense not to encourage Uber here??

A federal appeals court ruled today a judge had used an incorrect definition of "malice" in jury instructions and so ordered a new trial for Nancy Gray, an American Airlines flight attendant sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for leaving a note on a plane about to take off that there was a bomb on board.

Gray's conviction on a charge of "providing false information regarding a bomb threat on an airplane" required proving she acted maliciously. In a 2-1 decision, the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston debated just what that means:

Snow farm on the South Boston waterfront

Several days of running rented snow melters nearly nonstop at the city snow farm in the Marine Industrial Park have helped chop down the snow mountains to size, Conventures reports.

Across the harbor, roving UHub photographer Chris Dagdigian watched a couple of the beasts at work outside Terminal C (the white streaks are reflections of lights in the terminal, not incoming laser beams):

Several city councilors say new flight paths out of Logan Airport have shifted early morning flights over neighborhoods not used to being awoken at 5:15 a.m. by low-flying jets - and they want the FAA and Massport to explain what they're going to do about that.

"It's really impacting heavily the quality of life of constituents in my area, who are not as familiar with low flying airplanes as they are now," City Councilor Tim McCarthy (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan) said, adding he has also heard complaints from neighboring West Roxbury and Jamaica Plain.

A woman disobeyed a court order to stay away from Logan Airport early this morning, hopped into a State Police cruiser left idling at Terminal A and managed to drive it all the way to the Orient Heights T stop before troopers caught up with her, State Police say.

State Police have launched an internal investigation to figure out how a woman who'd been apparently passed out in the terminal only minutes before was able to drive away with one of their cars.

State Sen. Will Brownsberger (2nd Suffolk and Middlesex) reports Logan Airport is resuming a noise-abatement takeoff system the FAA ordered it to stop last summer.

Basically, late at night, weather permitting, the airport tries do all of its landings and departures over the water. That means planes are flying in opposite directions onto adjacent runways. The traffic has to be timed to separate them adequately and maintain safety. This is feasible only late at night when traffic is low.

Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly reports on a class-action lawsuit filed against the car service over an $8.75 fee, allegedly to reimburse drivers for Massport fees, on all trips to and from the airport.

According to the lawsuit, Massport doesn't add a surcharge to any drop offs and only charges Uber drivers who are also licensed as livery drivers for pickups - and even then, at a lower rate than it charges taxi drivers.

Four Massport workers admitted today they accepted cash and other items from cab drivers in exchange for letting them move up in the queue for passengers at Logan Airport, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

In exchange for the plea, Suffolk Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Locke ordered each of the four former "cab starters" to pay a $10,000 fine and placed them on two years of probation. He also barred them from trying to get a job with a government agency - or collecting their state pensions.

Always check the trunk for pythons before you drive off.

Scott Kirsner comments:

I prefer to bring my own python. Hate paying rental car companies' $28/day python-in-trunk fee.

State Police report troopers patrolling the lower level of Terminal C around 1 p.m. were approached by concerned citizens who'd just spotted a man drive up to a curbside trash can, put two containers in it and then drive away.

State Police Troopers and [bomb squad] technicians immediately responded, recovered two small containers from a trash can and secured and removed them from the area. The State Police continue to investigate the incident, but after speaking with the suspect do not believe there was any malicious or criminal intent, or that there was ever any threat to public safety.
