Wood duck

That's probably no big news for people used to wildlife, but to us confirmed city dwellers, well, you learn something every day. On a walk around Jamaica Pond this afternoon, I spotted this smallish duck come in over the water and land near some other ducks and ducklings. As it came in, it seemed to be whistling, rather than quacking.

Thanks to some folks on Twitter for identifying it as a wood duck.

WBZ has the latest on the black bear that has been ambling around Concord of late - and includes this advice should you find yourself mano-a-paw with the bear:

They are advised to talk to it calmly while backing away.

Talk to it calmly? Unfortunately, WBZ fails us and doesn't specify just what we're supposed to say as we calmly talk to the bear. Whisper sweet nothings? "Hey, how 'bout that Gronk!" What?

Raccoon at a puddle in East Boston shipyard

Eastie Strong spotted this raccoon just admiring his reflection in a puddle at the East Boston shipyard today - or maybe he was paralyzed in fear thinking he was about to be drowned, like his cousin up in Maine.

I'm guessing there is a nest of bunnines in the green space surrounding the Allston Fire Station on Cambridge Street (where it intersects with Brighton Avenue and North Beacon Street. We saw about three or four baby bunnies running around or just chilling there today at about 7pm. I picked one up to take a photo, then released it.

....aaaand I fail at posting pics properly. Can anyone help me? What should I do to get them to post properly?

Otter

There was no mistaking this as anything but an otter, because you'd think the Audobon Society folks at the Trailside Museum at the Great Blue Hill would know the difference between an otter and a muskrat, at least based on the sign on the enclosure for the critter.
