In 1980, I had just moved to the area and was thrilled to come to the market. Unfortunately some vendors were deceptive. They would put their finest fruits on the top of the display. When I went to select them, my hand was virtually slapped and the vendor said at that price would get them for me.

He reached his hand under the shelf and gave me a brown paper bag with fruit. When I got home, the fruit was good for about one day. I stopped going.

Just go to another vendor...
Or check the bag BEFORE you leave the stall

used to go in the 60's with my folks...my mom still talks about the 25lbs of grapes she got for a kwahtah...saturday night specials. The lights (and smells) and sounds were pretty memorable on a july evening.

That's part of your education, son, and a lot cheaper than a year at Harvard.

I had this done to me, so I went to a different place the next time.

So ... why do these people do this? One would think that pissing off customers would be a very bad business practice. Much of the business at Haymarket is repeat business, and I became loyal to certain vendors who were honest week after week.

You should give it a try again. It is a whole different scene with great variety and the best prices. I remember that too but now the quality is better and you get to pick your own!

Also the shops are worth exploring for some hard to find items and an excellent variety of meat. Oh yeah, Harry's Cheese and Cold Cuts got voted the Best Cheese Shop in Boston!

This excellent podcast about Boston's colonial-era marketplaces, including Haymarket.
