Arresting photos of naked guy swimming across the Charles

Mark Garfinkel was on scene yesterday for the dramatic take-down of a man who dared display his derriere (among other things) as he swam from Cambridge to Boston. Here's hoping there weren't any stinging nettles where the staties made him lie down.

Showing his son that life is full of ups and downs

Jeremy Marin asks:

Looking to rent an elevator for 2 hours for son's 4th bday in a few weeks. Ideas/leads?

Suggestions?

He adds:

The kid loves elevators. Who am I to argue? It'd be a fun surprise w/family greeting him & cupcakes.

Imagine Strong Bad rummaging through a wiring closet at MIT

The indictment against Aaron Swartz on charges he used MIT networks to download 4.7 million documents from an online database of academic papers has some details of interest to net geeks, such as his use of pseudonyms like "Gary Host" and "Grace Host" (because he was using a "ghost" laptop, which he might have bought at Micro Center) and his preference for the Python scripting language.

And it also contains alleged observations of physical breaking and entering at an MIT basement wiring closet:

On January 4, 2011, Aaron Swartz was observed entering the restricted basement network wiring closet to replace an external hard drive to his computer.

On January 6, 2011, Swartz returned to the wiring closet to remove his computer equipment. This time he attempted to evade identification at the entrance to the restricted area. As Swartz entered the wiring closet, he held his bicycle helmet like a mask to shield his face, looking through ventilation holes in the helmet. Swartz then removed his computer equipment from the closet, put it in his backpack and left, again masking his face with the bicylcle helmet before peering through a crack in the double doors and cautiously stepping out.

Innocent, etc.

DA: Scooter driver smashes woman's window with helmet, gets head smashed by woman's husband outside court

Freedberg (l), Castro-LaboyFreedberg (l), Castro-LaboyA man leaving court yesterday on charges he smashed in the window of a woman he claimed cut him off found himself under attack when the woman's husband grabbed his helmet and hit him in the head with it, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

The alleged helmetting happened outside Brighton District Court, where Nathaniel Freedberg, 51, of Allston, had just been arraigned on a charge of malicious destruction of property.

According to the DA's office, Freedberg was puttering down Allston Street on his Vespa PX150 scooter Sunday afternoon when he felt he was cut off. Rather than just sitting there, stewing, Freedberg sped after the woman and caught up with her on Comm. Ave, where he took off his helmet and repeatedly smashed her window until it shattered, showering her with broken glass as her four-month-old son sat in the back seat, the DA's office says:

State Police rescue family lost in Purgatory

State Police report a woman out for a walk with her four grandchildren got lost in Purgatory Chasm in Sutton today. Fortunately, she was able to avoid eternal damnation by using her cell phone to call 911:

A command post was established along Route 146 in Sutton as Troopers from the Millbury Barracks took up strategic locations along the fence line that separates the forest from the highway. By utilizing the cruiser sirens, Troopers were able to direct the family to safety. While Troopers awaited fence cutting tools, one of the four children collapsed. Troopers scaled the fence and provided first aid. In the interim, the grandmother also collapsed. First aid was provided to her and care of all parties was turned over to responding EMTs. All five were transported to the U Mass Hospital Lake Street in Worcester and treated for dehydration and abrasions.

Sure, we're mean and we're poorly dressed...but at least we shun fast food chains

Ok, Bostonians are the worst dressed city in America. Sure, Bostonians are the #1 headstrong-not-heartstrong city. But did you know that we're also the least likely to spend money in fast food chains?

According to a survey of 100 American cities' spending data, Boston not only spends the least on fast food every year, but we spend 92% less than the national average! The next closest city is Philadelphia with a meer 63% less than the national average. On the other end of the spectrum is Plano, TX which spends more than twice the national average (and almost 30x more than we do!).
