The problem with taxis

An Atlantic article on cab-alternative Uber focuses on Washington, DC, but a lot of it sounds familiar:

Almost all the everyday complaints about cabs trace back to this regulatory cocktail. Drivers won’t take you to the outer reaches of your metropolitan area? The regulated fares won’t let them charge you more to recover the cost of dead-heading back without a return customer. Cabs are poorly maintained? Blame restricted competition, and the inability to charge for better quality. Cabbies drive like maniacs? With high fixed costs for cars and gas, and no way to increase their earnings except by finding another fare, is it any wonder that they try to get from place to place as fast as possible?

Channel 4 has dispatched its news chopper to keep us in the loop on this developing story.

No word yet if the horse is stuck with a frog on a log in that bog at Ponkapoag.

Dover man convicted of raping niece will get new trial because judge disallowed key part of his defense

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today that William Polk did not get a fair trial before being convicted of raping his 15-year-old niece when her family came from out of state to visit him in 2007.

In its ruling, the state's highest court said the judge in Polk's trial erred in not letting his lawyer call to the stand a psychologist who would have testified the girl suffered from dissociative memory disorder, which might have led her to fabricate the story based on things she had heard from her scary biological mother.

The defendant contends that the exclusion of that evidence was prejudicial because it denied him the opportunity adequately to explain to the jury the significant possibility that [the teen]'s allegations were either fabricated or arose from a distortion of memory. We conclude that the exclusion of this evidence was prejudicial error and therefore reverse the convictions and remand the case for a new trial.

City golf courses are so staffed by hip people who understand smart phones

Jacquelyn Goddard at the Boston Parks and Recreation Department says whoever complained about being forced to print out a coupon to get a discount at the William Devine Golf Course is wrong:

The City of Boston does accept "smart phone" coupons. The coupon for the golf course discount says the coupon "must be presented" and this means we allow golfers to show us the coupon on their phone and that we do not insist the coupon be printed. So, the City of Boston is paperless and that can be an option for golfers.

Mmm, what goes better with clam chowder than glazed donuts?

Travelers on Japan Airlines' new non-stop service between Boston and Tokyo are in for a Boston treat: Donuts AND chowder, on one convenient tray that just begs you to dunk the donuts in the chowder.

Apparently, Mister Donut is a huge donut chain in Japan that has its roots right here in the greater Hub area. In fact, it's sort of the yin to the Dunkin' Donuts yang - it got its start when two budding donut entrepreneurs (brothers in law, no less) couldn't agree on the future of donuts and so separated, one to form Dunkin' Donuts, the other Mister Donut.

So if you've ever wondered about the possibility of alternate-universe Dunkin' Donuts donuts, just book a flight to Tokyo to get your exclusive "AIR MISDO set, which includes a chocolate-coated cinnamon ring and a maple-flavored ring of classic Mister Donut doughnuts, alongside a bowl of Boston's signature clam chowder."

H/t William Bradshaw.
