Direct hit on the Pru

Commish96 shot this last night. Lightning strikes on the Pru are actually relatively common, but always dramatic.

Crossing a blue line: BPD wants to take over patrols along South Boston waterfront from staties

The Globe reports the push comes after Monday's Carson Beach incident:

“They're perfectly suited to do a lot of important jobs in policing," [Commissioner Ed] Davis said of State Police. "They’re not as well suited to doing community policing in the neighborhoods in Boston."

However, Davis doesn't want authority over the Esplanade, also under state control. And the VFW and West Roxbury parkways weren't even mentioned in the article, even though they are lined with houses - and Davis cited domestic disputes along Day Boulevard that BPD gets called on but then can't do anything about as one reason to seek legislative approval for the shift.

Bolts over Boston

Triple Back Bay bolts

Historygradguy titled his photo of the Back Bay OMFG (see it large). Nathanael Hevelone captured some lightning over Allston at the height of the storm:

Lightning bolts

Meanwhile, the mayor's office reports about 3,000 customers lost power in the storm, concentrated in Dorchester, West Roxbury and Brighton.

No port in the storm for morons?

Donna Halper reports that at the height of the storm, Channel 4 put a guy on with a live report from hard-hit Douglas:

At first, he started giving what sounded like a reasonable eye-witness report, but then he said everything sounded like "Baba-booey, baba-booey." They cut him off immediately, but again, it shows that putting callers on the air live without first vetting them (in a crisis, that's hard to do) can lead to problems. Btw, I had no idea Howard Stern's prank callers were still out there. Stupid people-- I mean, it's a time of an emergency, people are eager to get the latest weather, and this joker takes advantage of the situation. Sad.

Oh, mammatus!

Abigail Matzeder took a photo of the mammatus clouds over the Back Bay this evening. Dan Kissam took photos of the same clouds over Allston.

Channel 5 reported debris from Monson fell in Upton, 50 miles away. Stephanie Bradner reported from Dedham:

Debris was falling in Dedham MA from 6-630 PM - leaves, branches and other items falling from much higher than treetops.

Jenn Martinelli said, if nothing else, East Boston got an interesting sunset out of the storm:
