Man overboard in Boston Harbor

The Coast Guard reports crews rescued two of three people from a 21-foot pleasure craft that began sinking off Graves Light in the outer harbor around 6:50 p.m., but are continuing to search for the third person, a man who decided to try to swim for Graves Light rather than stay with the boat.

Universal Hub going mobile - for reals this time

With any luck, we should have honest-to-goodness UHub iPhone and BlackBerry apps up and running in about a month (I just spent a good part of a perfectly beautiful Saturday designing splash screens and icons).

The apps will have the UHub breaking-news goodness you'd expect, but also stuff like restaurant and store listings and reviews, all searchable and mappable. To get a rough idea of how that'll work, go to www.locallite.com/search.php and search for something (say, "pizza" in "Boston, MA").

It's obviously way more sophisticated than anything I could pull off on my own; I'm working with a local startup called Zebek that's built what seems to be a cool back end for mobile information-based apps. Blatant commercial pitch: If you own a business in the Boston area and want to reach the sort of wicked awesome people who would use a UHub app, contact me.

Droid users will notice I did not mention you. Unfortunately, there's no Droid app just yet. In the short run, there will be a Web interface for you (and users of other mobile phones and devices). But a specific Droid app is in the works.

Police: Armed robber on the loose in the South End

Boston Police report they are looking for a black man, 5'8" or 5'9", for a series of armed robberies over the past month, sometimes by himself and sometimes with one or two accomplices, but which in all cases involve the guy showing a gun. Police say the guy doesn't seem too concerned about being stopped; in a couple of cases, after the robbery, he simply walked away.

Foot licker arrested in Watertown Square

The heel went right up to a woman at a bus stop, took her shoe off and licked her foot, Channel 7 reports:

The fact this dude was able to walk up and take a woman's shoe off and lick her foot, that's strange. You don't think that would happen in downtown Watertown, you know?

Line around the corner just to get into the Apple store this morning

Anita Patel reports from Boylston Street on the first of our tax-free days. Urbanity Dance reports they were giving out free Smart Water.

Ed. true confession: We need a new refrigerator. We "bought" one on Thursday to avoid the rush today; salesman said they would hold our "proposal" until this morning, then ring it in.

Ohio is a foreign country

While visiting my family in Columbus, we went to an Italian restaurant. The menu lists Samuel Adams under the category 'IMPORTED BEERS'.

(Menu is here. Unfortunately I can't link directly to the Dinner->Beverages->2 page because it's all in Flash.)

Needham man learns how caller ID works

Rebecca reports on a dumbass who used his home phone to make an obscene call to her today:

... So, I do a 411.com search thinking no one is stupid enough to do that from a land line. Oh yeah... he was. ...
