Brianne Fitzgerald, an RN with a master's in public health explains why "harm reduction" efforts, such as an Albany Street facility where addicts can come down from a high under medical supervision, shouldn't be expanded to include "safe injection" sites:

It's essentially giving up hope on people who use IV drugs. One might even call this end-of-life or hospice care. The idea of such a facility takes away a person’s autonomy and essentially forces a social agenda that supports the normalization of IV drug use over active care and treatment.

The Globe reports that Bill Linehan won't seek a seventh term as city councilor in District 2, which covers South Boston, the South End, Chinatown and Downtown.

Frank Ulip, who lives downtown and Peter Lin-Marcus, who lives in Chinatown, have both signaled their interest in running for the seat this fall by forming political committees. However, Linehan's announcement could also lead to a flood of candidates from South Boston.

Unplowed sidewalk on East Brookline Street

Neal Gaffey reports this sidewalk that runs along a Boston Medical Center building on East Brookline Street at Harrison has gone unshoveled despite multiple calls and tweets. BMC claims it's not their property, not their problem.

The Supreme Judicial Court today tossed out a man's disorderly-conduct conviction for acting up in a room in a hospital ER, even though it took several canisters of pepper stray to bring him under control, saying it would be wrong to criminalize behavior a large psych unit should be equipped to handle. Frank Ulip

A downtown resident has registered a formal campaign organization with state elections officials.

Frank Ulip says he will run for the District 2 seat now held by Bill Linehan of South Boston. Linehan has yet to say if he'll be running for re-election this fall. The city does not release formal petitions for collecting signatures until May. Read more.

A Suffolk County grand jury has indicted Atlantic Drain Services of Roslindale and its owner, Kevin Otto, on charges of manslaughter and misleading investigators for the October drowning deaths of Robert Higgins and Kelvin Mattocks 14 feet down while working on a trench at Dartmouth and Tremont streets on Oct. 21, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. As befits the new kids in town, NBC Boston this morning covered the annual L Street Brownies run into the bay like this was the biggest news to happen around here in weeks. Alas, as Shaneoinsaino captured, they made one of those mistakes that suggests they have some new recruits up from New York or Chicago or some place.

Prevailing sentiment in progressive haunts is “2016, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.” Between a stressful election season, acts of terror, and the crisis in Syria, many of us will be glad to see the calendar page turn on Sunday night. Still, to every cloud there is a silver lining, and at least when it comes to tackling climate change in the US, Massachusetts was a bright spot amidst the clouds of 2016.

Jonathan Andujar, 28, was ordered sent to Bridgewater State Hospital for observation at his arraignment on charges he threw a brick at an occupied Boston Police cruiser this morning, in an incident that sent one officer to the hospital with minor injuries. Read more.
