The city holds a meeting next week to discuss a proposal to replace a parking space on Washington Street with a "bike corral" that would give up to ten bicyclists a place to secure their bikes during stays in Roslindale Square.

The space would be next to the crosswalks from Adams Park to the other side of Washington at Cummins Highway.

The session starts at 6 p.m. in the Roslindale Community Center, conveniently located across the street from the proposed location, on June 10.

Sumner Soap

Instead of bake sales, families at the Sumner School on Basile Street are making and selling "biodegradable, Borax-free, aromatherapeutic laundry soap handmade from all natural ingredients."

Lauren Cooperstein Corduck, whose daughter Esther is a first grader at the school, got the idea while folding her laundry - laundry she'd cleaned with the homemade soap she'd made herself:

Inside the Roslindale Substation

Mark Katz went on a tour of the old trolley substation in Roslindale Square yesterday, led by Roslindale Village Main Street and Historic Boston, which now owns the long dormant hulk.

He reports the substation's renovation begins in earnest next month as workers ready the space for a restaurant by Chris Douglass (owner of Ashmont Grille and Tavolo in Dorchester) and a craft beer store.

Craft Beer Cellar, in fact, hopes to open by the end of the year, with Douglass's Third Rail scheduled for a spring opening, he says.

When the New Yorker stopped into Triple Eatery on Cummins Highway tonight, he left the key in the ignition.

Surprise! The car was missing when he walked out with his food.

Fortunately for him, a BPD dispatcher issued a BOLO and officers soon spotted and stopped the car on Washington Street, just before Green, in Jamaica Plain. Driver and car were taken to E-5 in West Roxbury for a reunion.

Right down Washington Street shortly before 9:30 a.m., and with a police escort, of course, because it wouldn't do to have some Masshole take out a national TV personality near the start of his charity ride to New York City.

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Carol Ball set the bail for Sean Ellis, who recently won a new trial on charges he shot BPD Det. John Mulligan to death in a Roslindale strip-mall parking lot in 1993, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

A judge agreed Ellis needed a new trial because prosecutors withheld evidence from his attorneys that might have let them make the case that corrupt detectives were actually responsible for Mulligan's death.
