Effie's Kitchen in Roslindale Square

Workers have been busy lately getting the old Wapo Taco on Poplar Street and the former Bel Lounge on Washington Street for new tenants.

The new sign for Eftimia Meletlides's Effie's Kitchen went up this week above the former Wapo Taco, which closed in June after its landlord doubled its rent. Read more.

City councilors are working with residents along American Legion Highway to preserve "urban wilds" along the road and ultimately create a more bucolic stretch out of what at-large Councilor Steve Murphy says is now a "blighted" area. Read more.

Baby Nat's Fruitland on American Legion Highway was ordered to reimburse workers $200,000 in back wages and pay a $100,000 penalty, the state Attorney General's office announced today. Read more.

The BRA board had been scheduled to vote on a proposed 17-unit condos building at Weld and Centre streets tomorrow, but has postponed the vote to let the developer answer neighborhood concerns about its overall size and height. Read more.

Tour de Force bicyclists crest hill in Roslindale and head down to Boston Harbor

Several hundred bicyclists rode from New York to Boston in a four-day ride to remember 9/11 and raise funds for the families of police officers killed in the line of duty. Early this afternoon, they turned up Washington Street in Dedham. As they crested the hill at West Roxbury Parkway, they got a view of downtown Boston - where they'd end their ride at the harbor.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m. at 14 Kittredge St., near Washington. His injuries were serious enough to have the homicide unit called in.

UPDATE: The Globe reports the victim will live. No word on motive or if he lived there.

A tree in Roslindale proved unusually susceptible to gravity this afternoon, taking a quick plunge onto the Needham Line tracks and causing all sorts of grief for people who just want to get home after the long short week - as well as for people trying to get into town on the line.

The Globe has the names of the kid and the officer (the officer who has had complaints in the past) and on what the cops were doing on Washington Street that day. The Herald reports the kid might sue.

Flier posted at Arnold Arboretum about killer dog

Oh, yeah, there's a reason you're not supposed to let your dog run wild through the Arboretum. Joe Growhoski reports these fliers about off-leash killers are now posted at the Arboretum: They kill the local wildlife, bite kids and bike riders, trample new plantings and shit all over the place. Stop it, the Arboretum implores.

The Globe reports Boston Police are investigating an incident at Washington and Lesher streets in Roslindale in which an officer trying to get a suspect into a cruiser during an arrest briefly put his hands on the guy's neck - after the guy started resisting getting into the cruiser and screaming as a crowd of his pals rushed the scene.
