Old Kid on the Block

Dorchester celebrated itself today with the annual Dorchester Day parade down Dorchester Avenue. There were bagpipers and horses, clowns and politicians, dancers and flag wavers. DotArt and DotOut. And some Old Kids on the Block. See more Dorchester Day photos.

Letting bygones be bygones by the Old State House

Rule Britannia

It was all smiles outside the Old State House today as the British consulate threw a little street party to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's ascension to the throne. Grenadiers milled about but didn't try to retake the former seat of the provincial government, instead spending most of their time posing for photos and showing off their weapons to children who asked nicely. The queen herself made an appearance, although the flight across the pond seemed to have left her a bit stiff:

They're walking the entire length of the Red Line

Follow along as Evan MacIsaac and Peter McCarthy walk from Braintree to Alewife. Why? Because they can.

They do, however, have all the gas you can pump

No nuthin'

The overnight clerk at the Gulf station at Columbia and Dot. Ave. in Dorchester must have gotten tired of saying "No" to everybody, as Butterh found out early this morning.

Bicyclist identified as BC grad student

Kelsey Rennebohm Boston College today identified the woman killed in a Huntington Avenue incident late Friday as Kelsey Rennebohm, a graduate student in the Lynch School of Education:

Rennebohm was a gifted student and an experienced teacher who worked to provide high-quality instruction and support services for all children. Prior to attending BC, she had worked for two years as a teacher in New York City.

BC said funeral arrangements were not yet available. Among her survivors is her father, Max, a United Church of Christ minister in Seattle.

Channel 5 reports the police investigation into her death, which involved an MBTA bus, continues.

Unbearable news out of Harvard: Pooh's house to be torn down

Sad PoohRoving UHub reporter Charles Bahne stumbled across some distressing news by the Harvard Science Center today:

The tree that has served as Winnie the Pooh's home for many years is scheduled to be cut down tomorrow.

Bahne reports an official looking sign - complete with an official Harvard University seal - says the tree's health is "in serious decline" and so requires the tree be taken out. A new tree will be planted in its place, but, of course, it won't have enough room for a small bear for quite some time.
